And after pointing two recent posters to the browser View > Sort by options so that they could change their sort order, I've just noticed that the fine horizontal lines between the three sort order parameter settings are no longer present: those marked divisions surely helped clarify how a desired sort order could be selected, maybe they should actually have been made slightly bolder...
Has the default sort order changed recently?

Has the default sort order changed recently?
After updating to v1.10.5, I have just noticed that my sort order has changed recently to one that I would never have selected myself...

Re: Has the default sort order changed recently?
I don't think the default sort changed. I certainly didn't notice anything, but Pierre is sometimes sneaky.
Update: So I went back and checked; I compared 1.9.4 to 1.10.5. Out of the box, default .ini file, the default sort order for both versions is:
Name, Ascending, Name Numeric Order
So no change in the defaults. Those users must have changed theirs without realizing. Wouldn't be the first time.
There have occasionally been seen certain anomalies with details view columns when upgrading (like column widths changing a bit), and likewise there been instances where small layout changes occurred (a particular panel is a bit bigger or smaller), but I'm not aware of anything with the sort order.
Regarding the fine horizontal lines: They are still present. But because of colors, they can't be seen in the Black theme. They are clearly visible in the Light theme, and still visible in the Dark theme. If you're using Black or Custom, perhaps that's the issue?

Re: Has the default sort order changed recently?
Thanks, my set sort order certainly changed at some point, but possibly not very recently due to my relatively reduced activity.jkm wrote: Fri Mar 20, 2026 8:22 pm I don't think the default sort changed. I certainly didn't notice anything, but Pierre is sometimes sneaky.![]()

Well, I use the default theme, and when I just viewed my selected sort order in v1.10.5 they were not visible, and they're not visible rechecking now, whereas they were visible last week when I was using an only-slightly-earlier version...Regarding the fine horizontal lines: They are still present. I think those section dividing lines are important to aid understanding and use of the many available viewing options, so possibly they should in any case be made more prominent...

Hmm, that's strange. I wonder if it's because of some interaction with your Windows theme. I see similar divider lines on the View menu itself, one right below "Preview" and another right below "Stop". And also on the View menu there's a vertical divider line towards the left, separating the icons from the menu labels. Do you not see those either?cday wrote: Fri Mar 20, 2026 9:10 pm Well, I use the default theme, and when I just viewed my selected sort order in v1.10.5 they were not visible, and they're not visible rechecking now, whereas they were visible last week when I was using an only-slightly-earlier version...![]()
I of course agree with you they should be visible. But it might not be a matter of making them "more" prominent if something is causing them to be hidden entirely.
With 1.10.5, default .ini, default theme, on stock Win11 25H2, I see this:

Re: Has the default sort order changed recently?
Regarding the sort order, I'll just mention that if you've played with the Details View (Columns) Presets (which is a new feature), those presets do save the sort order along with the columns. So if you change presets (either in Details view, or using the "Show Header" in the Sort by menu, you can alter your sort order without actually explicitly changing the Sort order, which might not be obvious. Every time you load a column preset, it activates the sort order saved with that preset.

I certainly haven't changed that setting, which I haven't even located yet...jkm wrote: Fri Mar 20, 2026 10:34 pm Regarding the sort order, I'll just mention that if you've played with the Details View (Columns) Presets (which is a new feature), those presets do save the sort order along with the columns. Thanks for the image of the open sort order options, I'm in Linux Mint and for some reason some time ago I lost the ability to make screenshots of opened menus, which I used to do regularly when providing support...
Regarding the previously mentioned visibility of the fine section dividing lines in the sort order options list, something has changed as I no longer see them, they need to be thicker or darker, so I'll raise that issue separately.

If you have a problem with sort, remove columns entry from xnview.ini, there was a problem before 1.10.5 when importing previous config

Ah, it must be something with the Linux version then.
