Freezes while scrolling through images

Post by TonyGA »

Mac OS 14.7.1 (Sonoma)
XnView version: 1.11.2

Been using this software for years and only use it to view my extensive photo library. Never use 99% of the other features.

Today for the first time, the spinning ball pops up while I'm scrolling through the images, choosing another folder of images or when I click on an image to enlarge.

Lasts 30 seconds to over a minute each time. Tried going back to earlier versions but same result. Have to Force Quit out of frustration.
Trashed preference file and it worked normally for a few minutes then freezes up again.

Driving me crazy. Any advice/suggestions would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forums…

If older versions with a default ini file show the same behavior, when they used to work correctly, then obviously it is not a new bug that has been introduced. The MP General Support board would be the appropriate place to post.

Check for aberrant or degraded conditions on your system. Is a NAS involved? Lots of potential for slowdowns there.

Could be a software change in your OS, since software changes in XnViewMP have been ruled out.

Does it happen with all folders or only some? Perhaps there have been new files introduced in the folders that are causing the issue, due to size or corruption or something else.

Other than that, you’ve given us nothing to go on other than ruling out a new bug in the app.

I appreciate your feedback and while I'm not tech savvy enough to give more details, your comment re NAS got me thinking (after I googled what NAS stood for, of course...)

I don't have NAS on my setup but all my images are stored on an external 5TB drive. I tried XnView on folders and images on my internal hard drive as well as a different 1 TB hard drive and it worked just fine. So stands to reason the issues lies with the external drive. Will look into diagnosing and possibly replacing that.

Thanks.
