Hi,
since a recent update I get an unwanted extra dialog when deleting a single file.
Steps to reproduce:
Select a single file in the browser
Press Delete
Expected: Direct confirmation dialog for deletion
Actual: First a dialog appears asking "Select the group to use" with options "Selected files", "Labeled files", "Cancel". Only after choosing "Selected files" the actual delete confirmation appears.
I have never used labels/ratings. I checked Metadata → Use labels and it is disabled. The extra dialog step still appears.
Version: XnView MP 1.9.8 64-bit, Windows
Is there a setting to disable this group selection dialog?
Thanks

should be 'Tagged files' or 'Checked files' in new versions
anyway
Clear all tags (checks) in Browser tab > Metadata > Tag (Check) OR
Clear list of checked files in Settings > Browser > Tag (Check)

The problem has been resolved.
I had never tagged anything, but apparently XnView doesn't like it when the PC isn't restarted for several days, regardless of updates. This seems to be an issue even while the system is running. After a restart, the problem disappeared.

Glad your problem resolved itself, but I think it's something else. My PC runs without rebooting for months at a time, and I do not see this problem with XnViewMP. I have sometimes left XnViewMP running for a week or more without quitting, and no such issue. Might be some Windows weirdness that is affecting your app, and was cured by a reboot.BaCharon wrote: Tue Jun 02, 2026 1:52 pm The problem has been resolved.

Re: Delete dialog asks for group selection even without any labels set
Hello
I am facing similar issue that can be reproduced at will.
In case it is not corrected yet, here is how.
1 Open xnView : it opens on top directory of test photos
=> Delete ask to confirm deletion as expected

2 Select a sub directory : select a plain photo without tags or mark
=> Delete shows the culprit message

3 go up top directory
=> Delete is ok
Note This case is done with the 'directory" panel. When using the "filter" panel a simple use of "all" triggers the culprit message. I did not find a way to go back to the normal behavior of delete.
Hope this can help fixing this anomaly

you need 'Checks' (checkbox shown in the top-left corner of a thumbnail when you hover over it).
Categories are unrelated to this dialog.

"you need 'Checks' (checkbox shown in the top-left corner of a thumbnail when you hover over it)"
The checks are active, that what I mean by "when pointed the photo displays white square star and circle"
Sorry for the wrong wording "pointed" instead of "hover over", "photo" instead of "thumbnail"
the 3 checks the square, the star, the circle that are all 3 white so un-set.
After some more practice of this surprising message it turns out that if I always clic on left button "Selected file" the "Delete" works as before. Just an extra clic ! I do not dare to clik on the right button "Marked File". After a few test I do not get the logic of what is deleted, can be a lot.
Thanks for your time trying to understand my wording. I can live with this feature.

Re: Delete dialog asks for group selection even without any labels set
I only get this dialog during deletion if there is checked file(s) in the folder.
do you see any files if you:
- press Shift+T OR
- click Check in Filter panel with Global scope?

Yes there are several checked files in the folder !
Thank you It explains every thing !
I thought that the dialogue type depends only of selected file for deletion.
To me this make things very confusing : you select things and the result is not based on the selection !
