hi!
i am adjusting some high-res images (e.g. 32000x21300 pixels).
although i still keep xnview classic on the side, xnview mp is much faster and less prone to crash on these biggies, so i want to use it.
nevertheless there is one issue in xnview MP that happens when i want to use image/rotate/rotate... (image/rotate/custom... in xnviewclassic).
the attached image shows the difference between using this function in xnview classic (left) and xnview MP (right).
when i initiate the custom rotation, a helpful grid is displayed.
in case of xnview mp, this grid scales with the image, which makes it impossible to use (at least in the case of these large images).
any ideas, pls? is there a way to customize this grid perhaps?
(i have also attached the test image, if you want to try it yourself)
many thanks in advance!
best regards,
K

Re: custom rotation grid scales too much
additional info:
i have noticed that the grid used can be adjusted in View/Grid settings
i have also noticed that the grid appears to work differently in XnView Classic and MP. in Classic, the grid appears to be screen-based. the grid squares do not resize if you zoom the image in or out. in MP on the other hand, the grid appears to be image-based and it scales when zooming the image. A setting to change this behavior perhaps somewhere? Or maybe it is simply a change in author's approach to realizing the grid?

Re: custom rotation grid scales too much
KarelT,
I think you're confused about the way the grid operates. But since you discovered the Grid settings, I don't understand how you can still have a problem.
- have a very large image, AND
- zoom out, AND
- define a pixel based grid in a relatively small size, like 40 pixels
A pixel-based grid is a fixed number of image pixels, not screen pixels. If you define a 100 pixel grid, you will see 10 divisions on a 1000 pixel image, and 100 divisions on a 10000 pixel image. A 40 pixel grid will have 800 divisions on a 32000 pixel wide image. That's a lot of red lines.
What you want to do is set a Divisions based grid, in View->Grid settings. I'm puzzled as to why you didn't try this.
Set it to something like 10x10 divisions, and then no matter how big (or small) the image, you will see a 10x10 grid.
Grids in XnViewMP are defined relative to the IMAGE, not to the VIEWPORT. (The Viewport is the area of the image currently being viewed on screen.) So as you zoom in and out of the image, the grid size will be locked to the image: the apparent size of the grid in the viewport will change, just like the apparent size of the image changed - but the actual size of the image and the grid is constant. So if you define a 10x10 division grid, zoom out to see the entire image, you will see 100 squares. But if you zoom in far enough, you won't see any squares at all. That is normal.
So define your grid as Divisions, keep it to a reasonable number, and you will not have any problem like in your image above.
Hopefully this helps...

The only way you can produce the "bad" image (on the right) above is if you:KarelT wrote: Sun Jul 05, 2026 3:20 pm the attached image shows the difference between using this function in xnview classic (left) and xnview MP (right).

Thank you very much for your reply, Pierre! You were right, but I needed a bigger nudge in the right direction, which @jkm provided later.
As always, many thanks for XnView!
