If I edit the names of all images in a folder to be Photo####. I get all images in numerical order by name only.
If I edit the newly edited folder to Pictures#### the result will change the name, but order may be mixed. I must manually SORT by name.
If I don't remember to SORT by name afterwards, any editing will destroy the order on screen.
Why? Why isn't there a way to fix the order of images in a folder, no matter what I do to the images in a folder.
I wish there was a button to click, LOCKING images positions within the folder, no mater how you edit.

Re: reordering
And exactly how are you doing your renaming?
I don't see any such issue when using Batch Rename.
Do you have Settings:File List:"New files are added at the end of the list" enabled?

Clarify this. Are you saying you rename the files a 2nd time, or are you changing the name of the folder itself? If you're changing the name of the folder, exactly how? Changing the folder name by renaming in the Folders pane of XnViewMP does not change the sort order of the folder.blackxacto wrote: Sun Jul 12, 2026 11:34 pm If I edit the newly edited folder to Pictures#### the result will change the name, but order may be mixed. For Thumbnail viewing:
When I position images in the display in an order I like, I SELECT ALL images in the folder and batch rename: MySort####, which starts the display w image: MySort0001, etc.
The only way I have found to keep a special order in XnView is to keep images within a folder organized as to name+sequential numbers.
If I SELECT ALL anytime afterwards and change the name to NewSort0001, etc. without SORTING BY NAME first, XnView will change the sort order of the images in the folder. The images will now be out of my order, but will have the new sequential names.
I wish there was someway to FIX the display of all images in order, so that I don't have to remember to Sort by name first, which I usually forget, losing the entire sorted collection in the folder. When I view my images within a folder, I want the order to fix, as editing without sorting by name first will always screw up the images display order.

So you're using Custom Sort? (View->Sort By->Custom)blackxacto wrote: Mon Jul 13, 2026 1:50 am For Thumbnail viewing:

What version of XnViewMP are you running? Make sure you have 1.11.5
There was a bug that was fixed in 1.11.5 (over 2 weeks ago) that would affect you if you're using custom sort. Batch Rename would not honor the custom sort order. But that was fixed, and it's no longer a problem. You're probably not on the latest version.
Your repeated wishing is unnecessary. The sort order for folders obeys the user's sort by selection. The only issue was files getting resorted when Batch Rename was used, and as I said, that's been fixed.
