Hello,
I have a mouse with a 2 scroll wheels. A traditional vertical wheel and an additional horizontal scroll wheel.
The make and model model is : Logitech MX Master 3S.
The default system behavior when using the horizontal wheel, is horizontal scroll.
I can see it working in generic windows, the web browser, excel spreadsheets, etc...
But in XnView MP, the default behavior is switching to the next image. Similar to the vertical scroll wheel.
But with a few differences :
- Both horizontal scroll wheel directions cause the "next" action. None cause the "previous" action
- The horizontal scroll wheel on this mouse is very sensitive. There are no notches, and the resolution is extremely high. So it is very easy to accidentally touch the wheel and cause XnView to fast forward multiple images
As a result I find the horizontal scroll wheel of my mouse to be more of a nuisance than a feature. I would like to fix it but I do not know how.
I have searched through the XnView MP options but I did not find an option to disable the assignment to the horizontal scroll wheel.
I have tried to use the logitech configuration app ( Logi Options+ ), to turn off the scroll wheel.
It is possible to totally disable the horizontal scroll wheel in all applications. But this is not what I want.
It is possible to setup logi options to detect which app I am using and set up assignments for specific applications, but it doesn't work when context switching. It only works the first time you open an application, but if you context switch or if you only hover on a passive XnView's window, the horizontal scroll wheel is still triggered and XnView MP switches to the next few following images.
Has anyone else encountered this issue ? What solutions have you found ?
I am not sure if I should file this as a bug or a feature request.
To summarize :
When using a mouse with a horizontal scroll wheel :
- XnView MP detects the horizontal scroll even though is does not feature an assignment. The only way I currently have found to fix this is to globally disable the scroll wheel for the entire computer (feature request : please add an option in the mouse settings)
- Both directions perform the same action : next image (bug : please detect scroll left and scroll right as different actions)

I also use Logitech mice with XnViewMP, and mouse customization is something that I have considerable experience with, so I'll try and point you in the right direction...
You don't say what operating system you're using or what version of Logitech Options. That's important.
You don't say how you're adding apps in Logi Options, but it you're selecting apps in Options+ from the menu it gives you, that doesn't work reliably. Instead, use "Add another application" and browse for the .EXE file for the app to add it. (Don't know if there's equivalent functionality in the Mac version; ask in the Logitech forums)
The correct way to fix this is through the mouse software. You either need to get a working version or fix the configuration. The logitech forums can help with that. Downgrading to a version of Logitech's software that used to work might be an possibility, either a previous version of Options, or Options+, or Setpoint which is the software they had before Options. Setpoint used to work well, but I don't know if it supports that particular mouse. You could find an old version for download somewhere and try. I see a report where someone said that functionality worked correctly with the 3s in version 9.70.68 of Options (not Options+). Support for the 3s in Options+ officially began with version 1.42.411539. Uptodown.com or Oldversion.com have older versions if necessary if you can't find them elsewhere.

There's also a trick for restarting Options+ when it breaks here.
If you find that to be impossible, then there are a couple of options remaining to you:
1. I don't know if your Options+ is sending mouse or keyboard messages when you use the 2nd wheel; it could be either. In XnViewMP Settings, you could disable the mouse action that is being triggered (Settings:Interface:Mouse) or un-assign the triggered keyboard shortcut (Settings:Interface:Shortcuts) which from your description is probably cmd_fileNext. This solution would be annoying, because it would break use of that functionality through the correct means, like your normal mouse wheel or you hitting a key. But this is sort of like complaining about your bullet-proof-vest being too hot to wear. The real problem isn't the vest, it's the bullets Logitech's software is shooting at you.
2. If you are on Windows, download and install X-Mouse Button Control (XMBC) and learn to configure it. It might be able to replace Logi Options for you, or it can modify the messages that are sent to other applications, giving you more effective control of how your mouse works with different apps. The context detection of XMBC works, and you can perfectly configure different mouse behavior for different apps. I use it myself. There can sometimes be problems with wheels, however, because of Logitech limitations. You'll have to try. XMBC can also identify for you exactly what Logitech Options is sending, which can help you in option 1 above. Autohotkey is another application you might try if XMBC can't fix the problem, but for this purpose generally XMBC is better. Both of these apps are for Windows. If you're on Mac, you're on your own. You can investigate software like BTT (BetterTouchTool).
Logitech Options+ has a lot of problems. Setpoint, its predecessor, was better in most regards. But Logitech making things worse instead of better is not a new phenomenon. The logitech forums (or logitech related forums on reddit or elsewhere) are your best source for getting advice on how to tame it. XMBC is excellent and can resolve a lot of situations, but only if you're on Windows.

Neither. This is something that can not be completely fixed by XnViewMP or any other app in its position. XnViewMP is receiving messages that Logi Options has injected. I am running Windows 11 25H2.
XnView MP 1.11.5 64bit
And Logi Options is indeed the "+" modern version (2.5.923095)
I did add the app my selecting the .exe manually, (because Logi options didn't provide XnView MP in the list initially)
I'll have a look at XMBC and see if it can tell me what signal the mouse is sending.

XMBC may be able to address your specific wheel issue on a per app basis, but what it won’t do is fix your broken application detection in Options+. As I said, that will hamper you with everything going forward, so you need to address that on the Logitech side. If you can’t resolve it in your current version, I would urge you to look into downgrading to a version of mouse software that works properly.
In some cases, XMBC can completely replace the Logitech software, but it depends. There are certain things about the wheels on certain mice that XMBC can’t control. The author of XMBC has looked into that and says that no enhancements in that regard will be forthcoming because it’s inaccessible through the standard Windows API functions he has access to. That limitation affects the side-tilting scroll wheel on one of my mice, but I don’t know if it will apply to your case.
