App running with executable stack

Post by apvs »

Subject: 1.12.1: "process '/opt/XnView/XnView' started with executable stack" in dmesg

XnView: MP 1.12.1 (deb package)
OS: Ubuntu 24.04.5 LTS 64-bit

When XnView is first launched (on a freshly rebooted OS), the message "process '/opt/XnView/XnView' started with executable stack" appears in the system log (dmesg). All subsequent launches until the OS reboot produce no new messages. Both the standalone version (from the .tgz archive) and the Flatpack version (1.11.7) exhibit the same behavior, which is also reproduced on Debian 13 (stable) and 14 (testing).

Effect: None, except that this behavior is concerning: such messages are rare and may be a side effect of rootkit/malware activity.

To reproduce:
1. Restart the OS (logout/login is not sufficient).
2. Launch XnView.
3. Run "sudo dmesg -T | grep -i xnview" in a terminal emulator.

Actual behavior (bug): The message indicates that XnView is running using an executable stack.
Expected behavior: Applications typically do not use an executable stack.
