The beginning of 2025 I started to investigate the stylesheet that comes with XnViewMP calls Custom, formerly Old Dark.
Because the existing dark themes that can be selected through Settings were not my taste, I started defining my own 30 shades of grey version.
This soon devolved into a hobby project. The original stylesheet was rather basic, selectors and properties were missing (like for bottom tabs), some screen elements where still coloured.
Because I documented everything that I found out, including very specific things like addressing the Actions tab in Batch convert, all these comments started to get quite valuable.
So only for those who use the Custom stylesheet option:
Though the colours might not be your taste, all the comments might help you to identify a missing setting in your own Custom stylesheet version.
This stylesheet is based on C:\Program Files\XnViewMP\UI\style_sheet.qss.
- Modified between February 2025 and Oktober 2026, last changes for the sake of Qt6.
- It has been expanded with missing Selectors, some Properties of existing Selectors were added.
- The ordering of Selectors is exactly the same as the original provided by XnViewMP to make comparing what changed easy.
- Every addition was a result of experimenting without access to the source code of XnViewMP.
- Almost every Selector or group of Selector has been documented.
- Some Selectors without Properties are left there as a reference.
- Only two colours are set by name: black and white.
- All other colours are in rgb(n, n, n) format, always with a space after the comma, so you can easily search/replace a specific colour throughout the stylesheet.
- It starts with opening Settings, General, Theme: select Custom.
- This will copy \XnViewMP\UI\style_sheet.qss to your profile folder. The file will also show up in a windows, you can close that.
- Where this file is put depends on your settings:
If you never changed Settings, Integration, Paths and then the paths for Configuration and Settings-Other:
Windows: The file will be in C:\Users\<your logon name>\AppData\Roaming\XnViewMP.
Linux: (most likely, not sure) in /home/<you>/.config/xnviewmp. - If you did change the paths, you know where to find the file.
- If you never used the Custom theme, you can delete the contents of the file and replace it with the text below, because the original will still be in \XnViewMP\UI\style_sheet.qss.
- After this you can modify this file the way you like. Close and open XnViewMP to see the changes.
After the upgrade to Qt6 the meanwhile grown up Gemini helped me. So much can change in a year!
The only thing I haven't been able to fix is the hardly readable dark blue URLs on the About pages, the colour is still inherited from Windows (on a Windows system).
Having all the comments in Dutch have held me back for a long time to put this stylesheet here, until the ligjt went on and I realized Gemini can do that too! I checked all the translations and they are OK.
So here it is, happy tweaking!
PS: due to policy limitations I cannot upload a .qss or .txt, so I hope it works in a code block.
