sorting according file lists

Post by joalsu »

Dear users,
I want to change from iview to xnview.
From Iview I have a lot of file lists with up to 1000 files that are customer sorted.
The lists contain the file name including the ful path
I can import the file lists in xnview when I delete the file header of the iview lists. The problem is that the sort order isn’t carried over.
Is there any possibility to get the correct sort order to xnview for slide shows, batch renaming etc.
I'm using the version 1.12.2 with windows 10.

Welcome to the forums...

If you're referring to Irfanview, you should say so. There are lots of things named "iview", but since you're talking about file lists, I'll guess you mean Irfanview.

Your problem stems from two facts: You're trying to import using File->Open File List, which is not intended for slideshows, and Irfanview's slideshow export format does not match XnViewMP's. When you open a file list in the browser, the browser sorts things according to the current sort method.

You can overcome this by modifying the files, and then importing them as a slideshow properly.

For the files, you will need to make two modifications:

1. Replace the first line of the file with following: (you don't need the blank line before the file names begin)

Code: Select all

# Slide Show Sequence v2
That will make XnViewMP recognize it as a slideshow file, once you change the extension to .sld

2.Every file name in the file must be surrounded by the double-quote character. As in:

Code: Select all

"C:\Photos\Directory1\This is my File name.jpg"
That's it.

If you have too many to do that manually, use search & replace, or sed, or write a script, or a macro, or ask a chatbot to do it for you if you don't know how. Or google to find a website that will do it for you. Or you can ask the author of Irfanview for an option to quote-enclose filenames when his app saves a list.

Once you have the files in the correct format, you can import them as a slideshow in XnViewMP:
Tools->Slideshow, go to the Filelist tab, click the Open button.

Then the files will be imported as a slideshow in the exact order listed in the files.

Hopefully this helps.... Good luck.
