At the bottom of the drop down list of filters, below Images, Videos, Sounds, Archives and All, is the Custom filter. What is this and how do I use it?

• It's a filter you can configure by yourself to get special effects at will; it's pretty complicated …:|

- I've not any document for XnView to enlighten this, but I've one for a very similar filter in another free viewer (development sleeping…), I could try to dive again into … if you are not in a hurry …

:) Hello !

- I rummaged in my PC, and found out the English text which could help you.
- I had to correct it a bit, because the original one is pretty bad…
- If you can read French, I've the same and the whole HTML¦CHM manual in which this text is included, more "comfortable" to read and study…
- Below is the dialogue of that programme, it's roughly the same than the one in XnView, though simplified about the "Save" buttons etc. The text follows as a quotation, since it's one and to save space !

User defined effect (Custom filter).

• As you can see, there is a [7x7] array of input fields in the dialogue, in which you will define the weight of each pixel.
Below, there are fields to select the division ratio, which should be equal to the sum of all weights if the effect has not to change the luminosity of the pixel. The last parameter (bias) can change the final luminosity of the pixel.
How does it work? Let's check some examples :

Filed “Division ratio” contains 6 and “Bias” 0.

- Now, how the pixel is it calculated?
- It works in a matrix style, the main pixel marked by a bold font (in the dialogue by other field border) is the pixel which is on evaluation.
- The pixels around are pixels which are positioned in the visually same position around the main pixel.
For each channel R G B, this matrix is evaluted by multiplying the channel value by the given number and the result of these operations is then divided by the division ratio and incremented by the selected number. You can use all integer numbers (negative too) including 0.
- If the division factor is 0, the output sum isn't divided (it gives the same result as there is number 1).

- If you want to create an effect which should not do anything (so that doesn't have any importance, just to test), you can create it like below :

, and you set the division ratio to 1 and the bias to 0. …

• Sorry, I misunderstood you, you asked for the Browser, and I thought "Effects" …Image
- The Custom filtering in the Browser is related to the choices you do on that Options Page.

- However, this mistake had a benefit : I reminded that the "Effect" Custom filter description was missing in the Manual ! :P
- Finally : « It's an ill wind that blows nobody any good » :D

Hi Claude,
Back to the original question: How to use / set the custom filter for files shown in the browser?
I can't find any entry for this in the Tools > Options pages. Even in the last version.

• As far as I understood, it stands for the custom file-types you state in the Options >> File list in the last 1.90 ß-6;
so, formerly File list >> Items displayed in the previous 1.90 A & ß versions…

This custom filter isn't that sexy, anyway. I found it and finally understood the base, how it works:
- It' uses the file extension only,
- It's more to exclude files: extensions put in the list will exclude those files from display. All other files are kept visible (or you should put all know extensions?)
- Jokers not allowed (pretty useless for extensions),
- The check-boxes allows to bypass/show the files, with additional conditions I can't match :?
Selecting Thumbnails simply bypass the filter (Browser and View mode)
Selecting Other has no visible effect (Browser and View mode)

Regards
