While reading topic Sorting order which clarifies some question on alphabetic / numeric sorting, an idea/question came to my mind:
In XnView 1.70 sorting/arranging files works like this (menu 'View->Arrange by'):
'Name' = Name, alphabetic
'Name (numeric)' = Name, numeric
The 'arrange by Name' of MS Windows matches the XnView 'arrange by Name (Numeric)'. The most useful sorting is by name (numeric). I now wonder whether in XnView the menu items should be renamed and the order changed to:
'Name' = Name, numeric
'Name (alphabetic)' = Name, alphabetic
Typically users would use the sorting 'Name' (which is name numeric and is default sorting), only in some special cases, people would use the sorting 'Name (alphabetic).
Also, when using the detail view (View->View As->Details) and clicking on the header of the column name, the column should be sorted by name (numeric), not name (alphabetic).
That's just some ideas, perhaps people have more ideas on this and/or pros and cons.
'Arrange by Name': Naming, default, ...

hey helmut!
i totaly agree with you. by the way. what's the real use of alphabetical sort? i can't see any dif. it just seems to mess with the numbers
till now i just thought there was only one name sort type (besides asc. and desc.)
lol
