Program does not respond when quickly opening and closing

I think I have a cache issue somehow.
I am opening some image from drive X: which happens to be a network drive.
When I open and then quickly close the image again, the program does not respond for a while. I checked with Process Explorer and it seemed to open/read all images in that same folder.
Could it be updating the cache even though I did not use the image browser or showing another image?

Which sort setting do you have? The browser is opened?

No image browser is open. I just start XnView by double-clicking an image file from windows explorer and when XnView starts it shows the image but also goes read the other files in that same directory.
You can see the HDD activity LED and CPU meter go up.
