Application error when starting XnView

Post by xnviewfan »

Xnview will no longer start. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling multiple times. Error message is, "The application failed to initialize properly (0x0000033). Click on ok to terminate"

I am running on Windows XP

Any ideas?

¿With what XnView version do you get the error message?

Try to delete the full xnview folder, and search on the registry at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\XnView and delete the branch and install again and test if that fixes your trouble, of course try with the latest XnView build.

An addition to Aokromes' suggestion:
There's the possibility that the download package is corrupt. But this is very unlikely, since both the setup version and ZIP version of XnView have a checksum and you would see an error message when installing, if the package was not corrupted during download.

Delete .ini file.

The xnview.ini file DOES NOT delete with uninstall. Delete it. It appears that file is not part of the install package and is created if one is not found (as in first program use). I have only used this program for two days and it appears that .ini file is a trouble spot. Not even sure what value it has. If your xnview.ini file is corrupted then it may cause your error message. Just delete it and XnView will create a default one when next it exits.

Couldn't even find an "xnview.ini" file so tried the full uninstall. Removed the xnview folder (had nothing in it) and all registry info (found no registry entry after the uninstall).

Downloaded the v1.70.4 Standard edition again and did a reinstall

Still getting the same error.

After the install, I look in the registry under HKCU/software and HKLM/software and find no entry for xnview. In fact, a full search of the registry finds no entry for 'xnview' anywhere except for uninstall info.

I don't think the app is getting far enough to even create the 'xnview.ini' file in the first place.

maybe if i manually create the proper ini file and registry entries it will work?

thanks for any info you may have
