strange Colors with RAW(NEF) format and converted JPEGs

Post by Guest »

I am using Nikons D80 and am saving my Pictures in RAW Format. The thumbnails show correct colors, but the preview and the exportet JPEGs are less intense (seems like a lack of green). If I set options/browser/preview CameraRAW on thumbnail, the Preview is fine but the JPEGs and the slideshow is sallow. I already tried some settings at options/read/cameraRAW and I can produce blues and reds (no greens) in the preview, the slideshow and with the JPEGs but no correct colors. I am on my first steps with XnView (Version 1.82.4) and I think I like it, except this little problem that keeps me from sharing Pictures on the Web! have a nice Day!

To complete the Question I wrote as a guest: I just checked my camera settings and they are on sRGB (whatever that exactly means) and JPEGs from this camera are shown correct by XnView. So I think ithe problem is not with the camera...

The only thing that I could think of is a wrong Gamma correction applied to images. Please check the settings in Tools | Options | Read | Camera Raw.
Default values are:
Gamma: 0.60
Brightness: 0.80
Red scaling: 1.00
Blue scaling: 1.00

Thanks, but...

The gamma correction is set on 0,6 and that does not change a thing. Maybe the fact is interesting that the normal windows XP preview of the RAWs in windows explorer is showing the right colors. I am short of time at the moment but I will post a link to two example Pictures during the next days...

I set everything under Options/read/camera raw on the values you sent me. I also enabled "high resolution", "automatic white balance" and "camera white balance". I tried different values for the gamma correction but it has no effect at all on the result. Neither the Preview nor the JPEG exported.
If I enable options/view/gamma correction and change that value, I can influence the preview but not the JPEG I am producing.
I dont know if it helps but here are two links:
to a JPEG directly from the camera:
http://www-public.tu-bs.de:8080/~y00264 ... camera.JPG
and a JPEG I produced from a RAW (NEF) from my camera:
http://www-public.tu-bs.de:8080/~y00264 ... EG_NEF.jpg
maybe these pictures can help someone around here to understand the Problem I have. I have a lot of good pictures in NEF Format, but I just cant use them this way...

Could you send me the RAW file?

I had probelms to find a webspace for this more than 8 MB file. Here is a link to the RAW:

http://service.gmx.net/mc/iRZwk63i95ZNm ... mLS3CQeOg7

If you click on "GMX Mediacenter starten" at the apearing site you will be lead immedeatly to the RAW file. The link only works for the next 30 days (thats a special gmx bonus ;-). Thanks for your help and have a nice day! JAKOB

Thanks Olivier! But what does that mean, and what can I do? Any settings anywhere?

Hi Pierre! Sorry stealing your time, but this link should work. It is the "DSC_0491.NEF" file. This time I tested the download myself and it works. Be careful, my computer tried to make it a bad tif automatically ("all files" and a ".nef" added to the "DSC_0491" in the downloadwindow helped that problem!).

Thanks, and have a nice Day! JAKOB

This link does work and your hint regading the format (.nef NOT .tif) is helpful.

When opening your image in XnView it all looks o.k. to me (XnView 1.82 & 1.90 alpha3).

Could you please try temporarily using XnView's default settings:
1.) Exit XnView
2.) Rename your xnview.ini file in C:\Program Files\XnView\ to xnview.ini.old
3.) Start XnView

I changed the name as you said.
I start XnView and can not see any changes.
When I open C:\Program Files\XnView I find next to the xnview.ini.old just a new xnview.ini :?:

Thank you for trying out. Sometimes resetting to default settings helps.

XnView has default settings which are used if no setting file (xnview.ini) is available. When closing XnView, a new settings file is created. You can delete the "xnview.ini" and rename your "xnview.ini.old" to "xnview.ini" to get your old settings back.

In case you want to understand the settings a bit more please see Info about XnView's settings (store & load).

In need of a good JPEG I installed IrfanView and had to notice the same problem. Obviously the problem is not with XnView but with my Computer. Before installing XnView the first time I tried some other "view and convert" Programs that could not convince me. Maybe installing and deinstalling those programs harmed my computer somewhere? Where could that be? :?
