What I think

Post by nightflyer »

Hello!

This is my first post on the board, so Hello again :)

I have tested alpha 3 and here is what I think:

-Why we have buttons for Folders and tabs for preview panel? They should be the same- I think tabs. Also icons for Folder buttons don't fit other icons.
-It should be possible to choose what EXIF fields to display in preview panel. Most of them are rarely used.
-This little tag box should not be placed together with "info icons", because it has other meaning
-If file list is on top and preview on the bottom, tabs of preview pane should be on the bottom as well
-Interface is generally flexible but it is uncomfortable to use. Look at ACDSee or DirectoryOpus, they have really flexible interfaces with lot of possibilites. In Xnview I can not even save different interface settings!
-I would like to choose different button sizes for toolbar and configure secondary toolbar as well
-The possibilites of mouse/keyboard configuration is limited
-Another tab in tree panel should be search window, with possibility to use Categories.
-There should be checkboxes next to Categories names for simple search and possiblity to use AND OR and NOT for Categories.
-The tree panel used in configuration window is strange. Very big spacing and rounded corners of highlight. Why not use standard?
-Maybe possiblity to choose which tabs to display for Folders and Preview panel?

I will write when I find more.

More thoughts:

-We have ratings but it seems they are used nowhere (?)
-Maybe we can have also colour ratings like in Adobe Bridge?
-In tree panel maybe only icons are better without folder names, like here: http://www.pspad.com/img/screen/mainfull.png?
-Can the bars between files, tree and preview be thinner? They take so much space.
-If user assigns any number or color ratings or Tags, he automatically has Categories: Ratings, Colour and Tagged. There is an option to remove rating etc. from whole set of files.
-Can we have U3 installer?
-XMP should be displayed like EXIF, not like text.

Thank you, nightflyer for your thoughts and suggestions. Though it's very hard to discuss these since these are so many in one topic. It would be good if you checked the forum for similar topics/requests first, and then post into a new topic per suggestion if needed. Please see Rules & Guidelines.

Nightflyer, I don't think you recreated new threads for all those suggestions, right? (ex: choice of EXIF displayed?)

So, I leave it to 'Feedback' for now, as it is a long but interesting one (needs updating to see what is worth left compared to other threads).

I think these are ones not resolved elsewhere:
-If file list is on top and preview on the bottom, tabs of preview pane should be on the bottom as well
-XMP should be displayed like EXIF, not like text

I agree. Shouldn't be to hard to parse the data since it's just XML after all.
Get the bugs fixed, THEN start adding features. It sucks, but someone has to do it.

Yes, but currently i don't want to add a XML parser to xnview, perhaps later as a plugin
