Folder Descriptions

Post by Danny »

Hi! First i'd like to tell you: amazing program! And it's FREE! Can you believe it??

With that being said, as an old ACDSee user i'd like to request a little feature: In ACDSee i was able to add a description for directories, too (those descript.ion files, you know?). With XNView i can only add those descriptions to files - or at least my folder descriptions from ACDSee are not showing up in XNView. So would you mind doing something about it?

Thanks in advance

I create my folder description with CD2HTML. It is stored in the file file_id.diz in the folder. It would be great if I could see this descriptions in the list view (F10).

See? I'm not the only one who could make good use of this. Any chance to get this in? Like to use "descript.ion" files by default (since they're already being used for pictures, right?) and an option to use "file_id.diz" files instead as Anika requested.

Danny and Anika,

thank you for your suggestions. To your suggestions make sense. The folder information could be displayed in the pane/area of the preview, whenever selecting a folder in the folder tree or in the file list (right side).

When supporting other program's file/folder information, we should make sure that the most common programs are supported. E.g. Total Commander is a candidate, not sure whether Total Commander supports folder informations.

I've never heard of Total Commander before. :?:

And i think ACDSee is a very well-known and wide-spread program. So it sure would make sense to support their way of folder descriptions (just like the pictures in "descript.ion" files), no? I thought it should show up in the browser's description pane like this: Image

Dany et al,

thank you Dany for the post with the screenshot , which make things clear. For the non-Germans: "Beschreibung" is "Description" in English.

The column description can be seen in detail view, only, also I wonder where the description of the current folder is shown. Any ideas? Or is there no need for displaying info for the current folder?

Greetings,

Helmut

PS @Dany: Perhaps you can make an English version of the Screenshot and replace the current one on your server.

You're welcome.
Well, i don't really need the description for the currently displayed folder but ACDSee has a field in the status bar at the bottom of the window which shows the current folder's description. So you may do it like that since space shouldn't be an issue, i think. But like i said, personally i don't need to have that.

On a sidenote: it seems that XNView can already read folder descriptions from "descript.ion" files, but it can't write them.

Greets & thanks for taking the time

Dany,

thank you for the info on the current folder and the status bar and for the English screenshot.

In the browser, the statusbar is pretty full, already. Not sure whether the space left is enough for description, especially for longer ones.
