I have done it with the text:
"I have now used smaller files. The file skpfile2.jpg is a partial screendump to show that file linus-1.skp is recognized as Autodesk SketchUp component (Interlaced) and linus-1mac.skp is of the type Unknown.

XnView on Mac

As it works with me is:
Double click on xnview opens also X11. Then you see small in the left top corner XnView v1.68 and below that File Option Info. This small window is on top of the larger xterm window.

Click on File and select Browse. If gives also the possibility to use Ctrl+B and other key ...

....There's free chm readers available for MacOS X. Think that's a better way than converting HTML files back and forth.
Such a freeware chm viewer is http://chmox.sourceforge.net/ .

Could you, Wouter or a Macintosh user check "chmox" out?

I tried it and it works fine! Problem solved.

The .chm file is created from single HTML pages, with some effort an Online help could be created which can be viewed with your normal browser. Do web browsers on McIntosh support frames? If so, the table of contents could appear in a frame on the left and the contents on the right.

I am working on Macintosh X 10.3.8. As far as could find out, there does not exist a help file for Mac. On the download page nothing is mentioned.
I downloaded the help-en.chm file, but it can not be opened by XnView or another program.

How to obtain the helpfile.

.....The problem I have is that files that I have taken from internet and are created using a PC are visible as "Autodesk SketchUp component (interlaced)".
When I load that file in SketchUp (latest version for Mac) and "save as" it is of an unknown type just as all the skp files created by myself ...
