Re: Unable to use scanner
Hi Wayne
As mentioned in my previous post, please go to Acquire from Scanner or Camera (WIA)... (instead of Select TWAIN Source...) in XnView's File menu to see if the scanner is listed there.
You may also want to open the “Scanners and Cameras” properties in the Windows Control Panel to check the status of the device.

According to some forum posts, replacing the installed driver with the Brother original scanner driver resolves the problem.Brother (Software User's Guide » Scanning) wrote:The scanning operations and drivers will be different depending on your operating system. Two scanner drivers are installed. A TWAIN compliant scanner driver and a Windows Imaging Acquisition (WIA) driver.
Windows XP/Windows Vista/Windows 7 users can choose either one of the two when you scan documents from an application.

Follow Step A to check if the Brother original scanner driver has been fully installed. If not, follow Step B to replace the installed driver with the Brother original scanner driver.

- If you don't know which version of Windows 7 you are using, 32 bit or 64 bit, please check by following the steps below:
Click Start => Control Panel => System and Security => System, and then check the System type.- The instructions may vary depending on the Windows 7 version.
- Remove the CD-ROM before starting the installation procedure.
- You must be logged on as an Administrator.
- If the User Account Control dialog box appears, click Continue.
- If the Windows Security dialog box appears, check Always trust software from "Brother Industries, ltd." and click Install.
- Disconnect your Brother machine from your computer if you already connected an interface cable.
- Make a temporary folder or directory on your HDD [hard disk drive] as the location to save the downloaded self-extracting file, e.g. C:\brodnt
- Download the file to the temporary folder or directory.
- Once the download is complete, open the folder or directory and double click on the downloaded file to extract it.
- Double click "DPInst.exe" in the folder created in Step 4. Please note there aren't any install screens or dialogue boxes after double clicking. Go to Step 6.
- Connect the Brother machine to your computer.
- You need to make sure if the installation of Brother original drivers is complete.

Re: Unable to use scanner
Hi,
You have been extremely nice to take so much time to try to get XnView to work with my Brother scanner. Here is my conclusion:
(A) You stated: "As mentioned in my previous post, please go to Acquire from Scanner or Camera (WIA)... (instead of Select TWAIN Source...) in XnView's File menu to see if the scanner is listed there."
This is what I found:
File Acquire from Scanner or Camera (WIA) opens a box that shows
Directory: C\
Filename: Scan
Start index: 2
Format: JPG-JPEG/JFIF
The box has buttons for Options, Import, and Cancel
The import box takes me to a small window that asks what do I want to scan with a choice of 4 settings, and buttons to Preview, Scan or Cancel. Clicking on the Import button turns on the MFC scanner and it scans. However, I cannot find where the scanned image is in my computer (if it really is there).
(B) You stated: "You may also want to open the “Scanners and Cameras” properties in the Windows Control Panel to check the status of the device."
This is what I found:
Scan Properties for the Brother scanner shows:
Status: Device ready
On Port: \\.\Usbscan0
Optical resolution: 600x2400 DPI
Clicking on the Test Scanner button gave me a window with the message "Your imaging device successfully completed the diagnostic test.
After poking around further I have come to the conclusion that the full installation of the Brother original scanner driver was not completed and the windows built-in driver is being used instead.
After reading about the procedure to download and install Brother Scanner Driver, I have decided that (at least for the time being) it is more trouble than it is worth. At my age (especially when I am not feeling well) I do not want to take a chance on messing up my computer by incorrectly doing something. So far, it appears that I can scan using the Wndows driver and I will settle for that.
Again, thanks for your interest and your time. I wish you the best. Sincerely, Wayne

Yes, I absolutely agree: Better safe than sorry!wayjay wrote:After reading about the procedure to download and install Brother Scanner Driver, I have decided that (at least for the time being) it is more trouble than it is worth. Your findings are proof that it's possible to access/invoke the MFC-7360N from within XnView through WIA import, but the preferred method would've been the TWAIN driver, of coursewayjay wrote:File Acquire from Scanner or Camera (WIA) opens a box that shows

The result of your test scan should be located in the root directory (C:\) of your PC, and the filename should be Scan2.jpg.wayjay wrote:However, I cannot find where the scanned image is in my computer (if it really is there).
Related topics (for future reference):
- WIA import target directory
- Don't start Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) Service (DONE)
- Picture-Name from the camera
- Change the scan settings for scanning from ControlCenter4 or the SCAN key
- Scan a document and open the scanned image with a graphics application using the SCAN key on my Brother machine
Same to you, Wayne. I hope you'll feel better soon and pay us a visit every now & thenwayjay wrote:Again, thanks for your interest and your time. I wish you the best.
