feature request: xmp sidecars for RAW files

Post by Fraenzken »

First of all, thanks a lot for the new version, Pierre. XnView MP begins to shape up pretty nicely! :D
I'd like to see the possibility to write xmp sidecars when adding keywords or color tags to RAW files. At the moment, my RAW converters don't see the keywords or tags (neither PhotoNinja nor AfterShotPro nor Lightroom 5).
Thanks again!

Try to check the appropriate checkboxes in Tools | Settings | Metadata... and report back what's happening.

I've done that. If I assign keywords to jpgs, XnView MP shows me the keywords in the properties windows. AfterShot Pro shows them too.
If I assign keywords to ORF files, XnView MP shows me the "xmp" overlay on the thumb, but doesn't show me any xmp information in the properties window. AfterShot Pro doesn't show any keywords either.

Hi Pierre,

would it be much hassle to add this? With this feature I could use XnViewMP as a DAM.

Thanks

As xmp sidecars? Or modify the RAW file?
Pierre.

I must post this again...

This is the BIG opportunity for XnViewMP. It can be done, just to be focused on what we have to do.

Now it doesn't exist a good program to organize, view and edit our photos.

I know, Lr has the upper hand on editing but there is Gimp & others. And the price to pay for Lr is too high. By 'price' I mean slow, resource hog etc. Also we can use a RAW engine by ourselves. ;)

First, we need an interoperation via XMP with the other well-known programs.

Read/edit/write their standard management part of their XMP sidecars (rating, color, keywords, IPTC etc.). No, I don't mean to support the custom XMP extensions (a la ASP etc.).

In the 2nd stage we'll tackle the non-distructive editing part. You have already a good non-distructive editing engine in place. See here:
Non Distructive Editing
Non Distructive Editing

This non-distructive editing engine looks familiar? :)

What stops you to put it in the main editing window?
(if you want details, tell me)

Also there are enough free / open-source RAW converters (editors) from which one can learn:

http://photo.stackexchange.com/question ... on-windows
http://rawstudio.org/
...also, I know that you know :) others (digiKam, darktable (very proffessional), RAW Therapee etc.)...

Of course, the best is to have ours.
But what is left? 16-bit/channel processing? Curves? Writing the edits to XMP?

What do you think?

As a sidecar please. Modifying the RAW file wouldn't be a good ideas imho.

Dear Pierre,

first of all a happy new year to you and a big thanks for the new version! XnView MP gets better and better!
One feature that I sorely miss though is the ability to write xmp sidecars for RAW files, e.g. after adding keywords. Thus the RAW-converter could pick up the keywords and write them to the developped jpg. Would it be possible to add this functionality?

Thanks again,
Frank

It is already there.

Try adding some keywords and/or rating and/or color to your RAW file(s). Then select the files for which you want to export the info and go to menu View | Update files from database

Test and report back if this is what you want! :)

Thanks; works splendidly! It would be great though to have the option to write the xmp files automatically when adding a keyword.
I use PhotoNinja b.t.w. - great results, albeit a bit slow.

Perhaps the best thing would be one or two checkboxes saying

"Export keywords in XMP metadata"

and

"Export metadata to XMP before using 'Open With...'"
