IMO the search results should be treated like an ordinary folder so you can handle the files in there just the same. At least that's how i'm used to it from ACDSee. Currently i can't start a Quick Slideshow from the files in a search result for example. That probably requires that it won't leave the search results until i click on some folder.
Maybe not in 1.8 though. That's up to you and how much work this would create.

Seems ok in RC6. Only thing i noticed was that it didn't scan the file headers unless you're in one of the thumbnail modes. Maybe that would be nice to have since otherwise you wouldn't be able to sort the results by image size for example.
