Scanning with XnView - error message

Post by Rosenholz52 »

Hi,

using my MultiFunctionCenter MFC-J825DW (Brother) in scan mode together with XnView (v.2.22) and high resolution (2.400 x 2.400 dpi) I get an error message (in German: see attachement): "Not enough main memory in your computer, . . . . ".

When I check the used memory it is always much below 8GB which is the provided memory (about 2,2 to 2,5 GB used, Windows 7 Prof./64).

If I want to scan anyway I have to reduce the resolution to or below 1.200 x 1.200 dpi. But in some cases I need this very high resolution. What to do??

Thanky in advance for helpful answers.

Bye, Rosenholz52

XnView Classic is 32-bit software, could that be the reason?

In addition, the TWAIN interface in Windows is normally 32-bit even in Windows x64, so installing XnViewMP 64-bit is not certain to overcome the problem, although you could try that...

cday's answer is spot-on. This is just some additional info:

Program crashes with high memory usage.
Exceeding 2GB for a 32bit application is a common problem on any OS. Some freeze, fail, or do nothing at the limit. Related info: Memory Limits for Windows Releases
To avoid: Limit size and number of thumbnails created. Limit uncompressed size of files used.

You responded (above)
So you need 464Mb to load it
... where "it" was the 47.6Mb image posted by surfacecleanerz .
That's approximately 10x the image filesize.
Hello,
It's normal:
The 47.6Mbytes image is "compressed", but you need to open it (RAM memory and/or hdd swap) : 15584x7792x32bits picture = (15584x7792x4bytes)/(1024*1024)Mbytes = 463.23 Mb, then at lest 464Mb of memory.
The same file in B&W = 15584x7792x1bit = 14.47Mb

Oops, too late ! LOL
My image is LZW compressed, which should have a great affect, because 5ß% are transparent areas (because of a bug in the Panorama software...).
