Hi,
I searched the forums on how to change the line color that selects areas for cropping, etc. It remains a dark, dull grayish brown. That only shows up well on light colored images.
I can't find an option to change this. The line color doesn't change when background color is changed.
If a selection for that doesn't exist in Options, maybe modifying a config / ini file?
Thanks.

Re: Change the area selection border color
As of now (v2.22), there's no setting for customizing the color.

I agree. A selection marquee (“marching ants”) would be the best solution.

there is even an upcoming custom .Ini tweak for users to disable the 'shade selection' too.

Would it be possible to slightly improve the crop by shading the area outside the selection ?

Re: Change the area selection border color
Holy cow. This has been a request since 2008?
I would think this is one of the simpler changes to make in XnView.
Also, I searched these forums (search bar) several times w/ different phrases & didn't find even one of the posts that XnTriq listed. so much for search.
Using dotted / dashed / crawling ants selection lines has been used in free image editors a LONG time.
Faststone 5.3 (waaaay back) used crawling selection border. So does Screenshot Captor & they're not even dedicated image viewers / editors.
Just a small sample of apps using dashed or crawling area selection lines.
Being able to see the outline of a selection area is often critical, not just personal taste.
If you always work on light colored images, the brown selection line isn't a big deal. But that's not the case.
I guess this change / addition has been a formal feature request for some time & nothing's been done?
Has any reason been given why it can't / hasn't been implemented?
Should / could there be a voting mechanism for how many users would like to see specific changes.
No, devs can't add every feature in the world, but based on behavior of many other apps, it seems fairly common (& important).

There is only one dev, Pierre, who makes his software available as freeware for non-commercial use...xnmen wrote:... devs can't add every feature in the world ...

There is a practical limit to what one person can do, and Pierre's emphasis for some time has been on developing the widely-acclaimed, cross-platform with UInicode support, XnViewMP...budz45 wrote:The feature request of this topic has now ... been included ... in XnView MP...
Development of XnView 'Classic' has not entirely ceased, but is a lower priority at the moment.
I too have been wondering recently if search is working correctly at the moment...xnmen wrote:Also, I searched these forums (search bar) several times w/ different phrases & didn't find even one of the posts that XnTriq listed...

Re: Change the area selection border color
cday, thanks. Yes, I was speaking collectively about all software & devs, not being able to add everything on wish lists.
I understand about wanting to focus on the newer XnView MP (is that for "More Power?").
Still in beta / alpha, I assume. Not sure how stable (relatively) it's been. I don't mind testing them out, if they're not so bad that they crash my system (or worse).
I don't know about the search function here. Based on terms & phrases I used, some of the threads linked by Xn Triq should have come up. On some forums, certain users / mods crawl all over you for asking a question already in the DB, but in my experience, search functions on forums can be pretty bad. Even on major corporations' sites. I often use external search engines (Ixquick, Startpage) to search for forum topics.

Re: Change the area selection border color
Thanks for the good info.
I'm not sure why I would have thought to enter the key word "marquee." That refers to the style of "moving" line - which the area selection outline in XnView classic is not.
Marquee doesn't refer to the function the line performs.
I asked about changing line color, not the style.
I must be missing something on how one would guess to use a word that bears no current relation, unless they happened to see other posts that used the term?
Anyway, this is nothing new on most forums. Many times, I've entered exact titles of posts on forums that the search didn't find. Later I'd stumble across them, sitting there w/ the exact phrase I typed in. Often they can't find the topic number.
Cheers,

I didn't mean to imply that you should've searched for that term. I was just trying to demonstrate that external search engines often yield better results than the native search of phpBB.
