Anyway, the problem is not that my database has somehow got funky. The problem is that I can't reliably restore categories once I have to recreate the database -- and there will other cases and other problems which may force me or others to recreate a database with many hours worth of tagging in it.
I think I give up for the time being. I will revisit this topic at some point in the future or perhaps I find a completely different solution. Thanks.
