Crashes if path is long or contains foreign characters

Post by Lee James »

I have had a problem with XnView for a long time now. When I open an image, the program always crashes if:

1. The folder path contains foreign characters (eg עִבְ or 漢字)

or

2. The folder path is longer than about 237 characters

Similar threads from the past:

I'm running Win7 x64

(Also, I still can't zoom selection with the right mouse button. I hope this will be fixed one day.)

XnView Classic doesn't support Unicode characters, only XnView MP and XnConvert, but I wasn't aware it could cause a crash...

A limitation of the operating system, rather than XnView software?

A separate thread might be better for that request, but I think that option is supported in XnView MP... :)

Thanks for the reply Cday :)

I thought XnView MP was really just for Mac or Linux users?

I have just found a list of differences between XnView and XnView MP, but I still don't get why there are two versions? Could anyone please explain? If XnView MP has more features and is more developed, why is the classic version popular? Is this about speed? I remember when ACDSee suddenly got slow and everyone (including me) started reverting back to older versions - is this the same situation?

But still, I wouldn't have thought that unicode support could slow the program down? The ability to view all folders would seem like a basic essential to me.

Well Windows has no problem reading and opening those files with long path names, so I don't really understand why XnView should struggle.

Yes, it is supported but it doesn't work on my computer. I made a thread about this 2 years ago, but it still hasn't been fixed yet so I wanted to mention it again as I find it frustrating. I do a lot of zooming, and the preset zoom levels are way too far apart.
