Embedding categories into IPTC

Post by Phil_Rose »

I keep seeing references to this but I can't seem to find a way to do it. When I upload to Flickr the categories assigned do not go with the images (obviously) but the IPTC does. Is there a way to embed all the categories I have assigned as keywords other than by hand by editing the Metadata?
Thanks!

XnView Classic can only add keywords with IPTC dialog. XnView MP can add categories to embedded IPTC/XMP.

in settings>Metadata, enable 'export DB Category to XMP/IPTC'

Thanks for this but it doesn't seem to be working. Please see attached screenshots. I apply a few random categories to an image, I export using the shown setting and the IPTC does not show those categories as keywords in the resultant image. Am I missing something?
Thanks for sticking with me on this!

PS. I couldn't get these to render as images so I had to put them in as links.

Also, sorry for posting this under Classic instead of MP. Just noticed that.

If you add some categories, do you see IPTC tab in Info pane? Why do you use 'Batch convert'?

Sorry for the incredibly slow response. I guess this got away from me. I do see IPTC-IIM tab in the info pain if it's a JPG but not a PSD (which may be expected behaviour). But I don't see the categories there, of course. I then export using batch convert (that's how I always resize and export things. Should I be using something else?) and upload to Flickr and the categories are not added as keywords which is what I hoped would happen. Any further help would be wonderful and sorry again for my slow reply.

you would like to embed categories to IPTC for PSD file? Currently only JPEG, PNG & TIFF format are supported, else you need to use sidecar

No, I don't mind that it doesn't embed the PSD. What I'm trying to achieve is the ability to export images from whatever format and have the categories that I have assigned within XNView be embedded as keywords in the exported JPEGs. So, for instance, if I have a photograph of a bride and it is entered into the Weddings category but does not have Weddings as a keyword in IPTC then I was hoping that the software would embed Weddings as a keyword on export.

I was also wondering if there is a way of exporting that I ought to be using other than bulk export since you mentioned that.

Thanks very much,

Phil
