Stars added with Fujifilm X100V not all shown

I've added one star ratings to multiple photos using my Fujifilm X100V, but when filtering in xnview with the 'poor' star filter (i.e. 1 star), I only see a handful of the starred images (less than 50% of them). Why would this be?

I should add - I tested with Photo Mechanic, which showed all the starred photos, so it's definitely not an issue with the camera or the memory card.

The '1 star' is correctly imported, if you select the file and use 'Update catalog from files'?
