Similar File Comparison

Post by rsbrux »

XnView's "Search similar files" feature is truly brilliant, but I am suffering from the same confusion that monitor expressed in Question 1 of "Search Similar Files".
For example, I have several pairs of photos whose files differ by only a few bytes.
If I use "Search similar files" for "Similar picture content" of 100%, it finds all of these pairs.
If I use "Search similar files" for "Same file data", it finds none of them.
If the picture content is the same, but the file data is different, I suppose this means that the difference(s) are in the metadata.
However, I don't see any difference in the few metadata fields shown in the "Similar files result" or in the "Compare" tool.
How can I figure out what is different?

P.S. A minor irritation is that closing the "Similar files result" window returns to the browser window and thereby discards the file/folder list from the "Search similar files" dialog. It would be nice if closing "Similar files result" would either
  1. return to the "Search similar files" dialog, or
  2. XnView would at least remember the previous file/folder list for the next invocation

I made a zipfile with some of the nearly matching photo pairs I mentioned and a screenshot of the XnView compare screen. Unfortunately, it its too big to attache, but you can find it in my Dropbox here. Oddly enough, even with the method "Same file data", the file pairs are only recognized as different if they are in different directories. I realize that there isn't enough space to display all metadata fields on the compare results screen, but perhaps the space now used for a small subset of metadata (red box in screenshot) could be used to display only the differing fields, perhaps with a button to call up a full side-by-side display of metadata.
