Edit IPTC - Load Template Question ???

In the Edit IPTC editor, in the Load Template "Choose Template File" dialogue, there is a check-box, "Merge datas" ; what does this do when checked ?

Does that mean, if I have an image file that already has some IPTC data, instead of the template erasing that data, it will leave it in place and add the data from the template ?
