Issue with playback of 4k Videos

Post by Ph0t0 »

4k videos do not play smoothly. A 4k video will run for about one second, then stops for about one second, then continues for one second, then stops again, and so on.

To play the videos, XnView MP is running on my PC with Intel Core i7 under Windows 10. I don't think the PC is too slow to play a 4k video. Because the same video runs perfectly on the same PC with XnView Classic.

When I look at the XnView execution by the Windows Task Manager, I see that XnView Classic uses the GPU while XnView MP does not.

you can use system codec by editing xnview.ini

Code: Select all

useInternalVideoPlayer=false

I am not so familiar to write INI- lists.
Could you please help, to put the correct statement into xnview.ini.
I tried several variants like e.g.

Code: Select all

SELECT=ALL
useInternalVideoPlayer=false

but none of them worked.

Thank you for your help.

Now, by using 'useInternalVideoPlayer=false' nothing is shown at all. Only a bright image is displayed.

I found that this ist true for all my .MP4 .MOV and .ts2 video files.
Replaying of .WMV files - including 4k videos- works fine.

'useInternalVideoPlayer' is not declared in xnview.ini of XnView Classic.

I know, that I can play 4k Videos in XnView Classic as I wrote at the beginning.
However, there I have an issue with my old video clips of small size which can't be enlarged to full screen (see my post in XnView Classic Bug Reports).

Here is my complete story:
I have about 18,000 files mixed of pictures and videos.
XnView is my preferred tool to view these files. It is especially important for me that I can show pictures and videos without having to change the tool. It is also very important for me that I can turn on and off comments and information about the pictures at the touch of a button (key I).

All this worked fine as long as I used an HD display and did not have 4k videos. Now I use a UHD display (4k) and have 4k videos (even 8k videos are possible with newer smartphones). This results in the following problem with a UHD display:

XnView Classic
Playback of 4k videos works flawlessly.
Videos of small size are only displayed half as large on the UHD screen as on an HD screen of the same size.

XnView MP
4k video clips play in stop and go mode.
Playback of small size videos is ok. Because they can be enlarged to full screen.

If you use useInternalVideoPlayer=false, XnView MP use windows codec like Classic, it's not the case?

No. useInternalVideoPlayer=false does not help to let XnView MP play like Classic.

Windows Task Manager shows, that Classic uses the GPU while MP does not.

The attachment is an INI-list freshly made by XnView MP 0.99.7 without any changes by myself.
I may also send you the INI-list I was using before.

However, there is no difference in replaying 4k videos: Stop and go

Here is my INI-list I usually use.

I did not do any modifications except through the settings by Tools > Options.
