The last time I use this viewer it was on a pc without any problems. Good to read that you could start XnView MP on your Mac.
There at least two ways to convert an image:
a.) Open image in XnView (image view mode) and then use "File > Save as.." and choose a file format.
b.) Batch conversion (In XnView browser select one or multiple files and then choose "Tools > Batch convert...". In panel "Format" you choose the desired format.
Could you please describe your steps to convert your sfw file? What is the exact text of the error message?

Hi I got it to convert one picture at time to jpeg ,but to do a batch convert . Go to tools and to batch convert it goes this panel it has input ,actions output status . then I click big thumbnail all pictures all pictures come up Below it it has add files -add folders which takes my files and loads them.I went to to output in it it has source folder - folder to right typed in the disk no. Did not type anything in file name went to format and clicked jpg-jpeg/ jfif then click convert couldn’t find a destination drop down box on where to put it. also the panels is in view tab and is grayed out have no clue where they went .

Thank you for your reply, Weinee3947.
From what I can read in your description, output folder and filename is not specified. Please try out the step-by-step description in How to batch convert and batch process with XnView MP. I cross my fingers that you succeed.

Thank you for another trial and reply, Weinee3947. "Nightmare" doesn't sound to good. Your description is a bit hard to follow and a detailed error message is missing. Could you perhaps take screenshots of the tab "Input", "Action" and "Output" of batch conversion plus the error message? A screen video would be even better. With that extra information we might find the reason of your current problem. ATM, this sounds much like a problem of "Access rights" to me.
