Opening multiple images from file viewer

In the file viewer, if I select multiple image files and then shift-double click on them it only opens the last image selected and not all of them. The expected behaviour would be to open all of them (in tabs), which is how it worked in XNView Classic and is consistent with how the Windows and Mac UIs work.

It's still unexpected behaviour. Windows and Mac UI don't work that way, nor did XNView Classic. Is there any way to know that ctrl double click works? It seems like a hidden function.
