NITF Format

Post by Guest »

Hi,

I tried to open this NITF file http://164.214.2.51/ntb/baseline/softwa ... _3001a.ntf in XnView, but I get an error message stating that the format of the file could not be determined. Can anybody help me? Thanks in advance.

I have downloaded your file and could view it in XnView without any problem (looks like a satellite image of an airport).

For opening the NITF format, not plugins are needed. So there's perhaps an installation problem.
- Can you view and open the image in the XnView browser (start XnView and then browse to the folder with your image)?
- Which version of XnView do you use?
- Which Windows platform do you use (XP, 2000, ...)?

Rename i_3001a.ntf to i_3001a.nitf and if needed check nitf in options > associations
Also i think you must check options > startup > use all formats available
Curiously, I could view and preview it with "use all formats" checked but no thumbnail until i renamed it to .nitf

Surely only needed if a double-click in MS Explorer should open XnView and the appropriate image.
Olive wrote:Also i think you must check options > startup > use all formats available
Not sure about this one. I thought this option only affects the number of formats listed in the "Open" and "Save" dialog.

From what I can see, XnView does not consider ".ntf" to be an extension for images in National Imagery Transmission Format, whereas ".nitf" is o.k.. In case the extension .ntf is often used for NITF images, Pierre could add this extension to the list of extensions.

If you want to keep the .ntf extension and see their thumbnails you have to uncheck the option "Tools > Options > Browser > File List > Recognize only by extension". This will slow down XnView a bit, but you shouldn't notice this much.

Ok, i'll add this extension too

I encountered exactly the same problem. I can not open NITF files using XnViewer 1.91 on Windows XP. It says the format of the file could not be determined.

I found this old discuss on the same subject, but I don't know how this problem was resolved back then.

To add to my previous note, XnViewer indeed can see some NITF files. In the following website
http://164.214.2.51/ntb/baseline/softwa ... n_2_1.html
XnViewer can only view i_3001a.ntf and i_3004g.ntf among all the NITF sample files in the above page. Does it mean all the other files are not valid NITF files or does it mean XnView has limited capability of viewing certain kind of NITF files??

Thanks,
Alison

Hi:

Can you add the file extesion for .nsf and .nsif ? They are for the NATO SECONDARY IMAGERY FORMAT (NSIF) format which is identical to the NITF format.

Thanks

Pierre:

I downloaded 1.9.8 beta 2 and it doesn't have NSIF as one of it's supported formats.
Can you add it as it is the same format as NITF ?

Thanks,
Bob
