crop is greyed out?

I know this must be a clueless newbie question, but why is the crop menu item greyed out? XnView version 1.80.3 on Windows 2k SP4 trying to crop either jpg or bmp. Always greyed out everywhere.

- You must select an area with the mouse (or a pre-selected one) to get the command active, same for the related button in the tool-bar…
