1.6.3: Displayed via Catalog filter, but Categories not shown

Post by xley »

Been using the "Catalog" facility for many years, so been adding categories to photographs whenever they are ingested.

Can display a specific category via the "Catalog filter" to show its categorised images.

Then select a specific recent photo, and can see its allocated Categories via the "Categories" pane.

However when selecting older photos (it seems before about Sep2019) their categories are not shown. So even though they are displayed via the "Catalog filter" their related categories are not shown.

Operating system: macOS Monterey 12.7.2
XnViewMP version: 1.6.3 64-bit (MacOSX) - Libformat 7.167

I did export the XML list of categories via "Categories" pane, menu dropdown: "Files categories > Export".

The problem files are properly listed there with their Keywords.

But as said, they are not displayed as selected in the "Categories" pane.

Also in the "Browser" the problem ones do not show the little yellow icon to indicated "categorized".

When you select a file without "categorized icon" but with good categories in xml, what do you have in 'category sets' panel?

I do not use "Category sets", but i have enabled that panel now. The "Assigned" section is empty for such files. It does have entries for the files that do have a "categorized icon".

Would the following steps (to export, and then import the same XML file) be a way to recover from this glitch?
  • via "Categories" panel, menu dropdown: "File's categories > Export".
  • via "Categories" panel, menu dropdown: "File's categories > Import".
There is no rush. So if you need me to assist with any more investigation before doing that, then okay.

Well i do believe so. As noted earlier in this thread, i have exported it. Then randomly verified ones that do show their categories in the "Categories panel" and ones that do not show their categories in the "Categories panel". All categories do seem to be present in the XML file as expected.

I will copy the ~/.xnviewmp directory contents for safe-keeping before doing the Import operation.

Gah, forgot to say an example.

For Category "Drainage", etc.

Not displayed: Filename: 0717-132013.jpg
Properly displayed: Filename 0829-035741.jpg

It's seems that you have changed the 'base path'

There is 2 times the 0717-132013.jpg file, one in '/Users/....../2015/07/17Jul2015/' folder with categories, and one in '@2015/07/17Jul2015/' without categories

Ah, possibly a long time ago when the images collection was moved from a previous computer.

I did again export the XML list of categories via "Categories" pane, menu dropdown: "Files categories > Export", this time with selected "Export all files from catalog". Then did a "diff" with the previous XML export which shows the entries that are without categories.

I see this via "Settings > Catalog" at the "Catalog maintenance" section. There are duplicated entries with an "exclamation" icon.
xnview-xley-1.png
(The image can be opened in a new window to see more clearly. Obfuscated the "/Users/me/Documents/" part of the paths, but the "exclaimed" and "non-exclaimed" paths are identical.)

I have not yet found an explanation of the purpose of the "Synchronize Folders..." button. Its warning is frightening.

Would a solution be to manually select each of those exclamation rows and press the left-hand "Delete" button?
