XnView: MP 1.8.3 - 64 bit
OS: Windows -64 bit
Effect:
Tag or Rating disappears when moving a file to a different drive
To reproduce:
1. set a tag or rating on a file.
2. Move it to another drive, such as from drive C to drive D.
3. Its tag or rating will then disappear.
If you move it back to the original drive then the tag or rating comes back.
Hopefully this discovery will help in fixing the bug.
Thanks.

If you move on different folder on same drive, no problem?
What do you have in Settings>Metadata?

Thank you for mentioning metadata settings.
The issue has now been resolved and it is not a bug.

Re: 1.8.3: Tag or rating disappears when moving a file to a different drive
Instead of "mentioning metadata settings" could someone perhaps say what settings are required?
I checked "Export rating in XMP metadata" and "Export color label in XMP metadata" and nothing changed.
Just to be clear, I am not moving the images using XnView. I am using FTP to move images from a laptop to my desktop. I tried images with a rating set before changing the settings and after. In both cases there is no rating after the transfer.
EDIT:
I have done a clearer test.
1) Verify the "Export rating in XMP metadata" is set.
2) Copy the whole directory again.
3) Still no ratings on the deskop machine.
4) Put four raw files in a subdirectory.
5) Rate three of them.
6) FTP that directory.
7) No ratings are visible.
Repeat with a jpeg file.
9) The ratings work the newly-rated jpeg file.
I also got a *.xmp file for one image, but I'm not sure what triggered that. If I FTP that file there is still no rating for the image with the same name unless I shut down XnView, rename the directory, and the load in XnView as if it is a new directory. Using View->Refresh does not help.
Bottom line: there seems to be no way to save the ratings I made during my last trip, aside perhaps from un-rating and re-rating each file. In the future a directory copy should work, as long as I have those settings turned on (and remember to override the defaults when I get a new laptop).

Welcome to the forums...
I suggest you start a new thread in MP General Support (this one was over a year old and is in a bug report board, not a support board) and clearly state what you want to do and how you want to do it (including the tags concerned), with the overall goal and problems you've encountered, and include screenshots of your settings from the metadata and sidecar pages. Then someone could be in a position to advise you.
Not at this point, because "required for what?"VeloSteve wrote: Mon Mar 16, 2026 8:18 pm Instead of "mentioning metadata settings" could someone perhaps say what settings are required?

My point was not so much that I wanted help as that by typing just 10 more words the posters could have made it clear what they were talking about. Then I could help myself or verify that whatever settings they were referring to resolved the problem.
Oh well, off to other sources.
