XnView MP and Photoshop *.ACR files.

1st problem

I have run into problem when i set up Open With command with Photoshop.exe command line -NoSplash and when i select image then right click Open With and select Photoshop on image that has Adobe Camera RAW adjustments *.ACR file it fails to load adjustments, only shows bare RAW image.

However when i drag and drop same file from XnView MP program windows to Photoshop it loads all adjustments okay.

2nd problem

Sometimes on Drag and Drop from XnView MP to Photoshop i see error "Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document.", but when i click "OK" then images open fine in Adobe Camera RAW plugin of Photoshop.

I think it has to do with XnView MP sometimestries to load *.ACR as separate file along with image upon drag and dropping to Photoshop, because same error message shows if i drag ACR file from windows explorer to Photoshop.

P.S. ACR is file created by Adobe Camera Raw plug-in after you make complex adjustment to the files like masks etc.

Here are my options.

When i drag this image thumbnail from XnView MP to Photoshop it tries to load ACR file as well.

1st problem happens when i right click on the thumbnail and select Open With > Photoshop
Then it opens thumbnail however ACR file located in the same folder does NOT load (Photoshop does NOT see *.ACR file so custom image settings don't update)

It's normal. When you drag&drop, 2 files will be used (selected file + companion file)

Drag RAW file from XnView MP to Photoshop it will start ACR then set exposure to maximum and click "Done" on bottom right.

Next time you drag this RAW file to ACR it will load your last settings (saved in companion file).

Now setup Photoshop with Open With command and right click this RAW file and select open with Photoshop you will see that exposure previously set to maximum is not showing up anymore.

You fixed in v1.8.0 however now there's another issue.

Open RAW image in Photoshop make edits to it using Adobe Camera RAW plugin, then Photoshop will save XMP sidecar with settings,
Try open image again in Photoshop (even after restarting the XnViewMP) and the settings XMP are not opening in Photoshop.

If i use windows explorer to open file or open menu in photoshop itself then XMP file is loaded and settings applied.

Perhaps best approach is to disable only passing of .acr sidecars files from XnViewMP to photoshop, and let it still pass both .xmp sidecar if present, error message shows on passing of .acr only, not .xmp

Now in v 1.8.0 i noticed this files being created that are not properly named.

When opening image with Open With command and selecting Photoshop executable then working on files in Photoshop Adobe Camera RAW and saving settings from Photoshop Adobe Camera Raw



generates incorrect file names.



OV48c - No LSC.dng_acr
OV48c - No LSC.dng_xmp

instead of proper

OV48c - No LSC.xmp
OV48c - No LSC.acr

1.8.6 problem still exists.

1. Using "Open With..." on .arw file command if have Photoshop executable set up as open with action then image opens but .XMP and .ACR sidecars are not loaded.

2. When dragging thumbnail from XnView MP interface to Photoshop it still shows error: Could not complete your request because Photoshop not recognizes this type of file.

This is not a great solution because if i Copy/Move files using XnView MP built in file manager companions also won't be moved?

Eventually after some fix you've made (i assume sometimes after this post was created). Open with command got broken now if using Open With -> Photoshop.exe then sidecar files .XMP and .ACR (that in same folder as ARW file) are ignored completely and image opens in photoshop as there is no sidecar files. In before when i created this thread whatever version it was sidecar was traveling to Photoshop properly alongside the .ARW file when using Open With menu.

Now sidecar only comes to Photoshop when drag and drop from XnView interface.

Only solution to load both sidecar XMP + ACR alongside with .ARW is to right click file "Open in file explorer" then drag to photoshop this loads properly with both sidecar files.
