Add to Album context menu option.

Post by therealgord »

Would it be possible to add a context menu option to ad a photo, or a selection of photos, to an Album. I realize that photos can be dragged, but I think a context menu option would be helpful. The album feature is not very discoverable, at least it wasn't for me, but it is a great feature.
Thanks for all the work you have put into XnView, it is appreciated.

Agreed.

This really needs to be done. There should be a right-click option, and a toolbar dropdown in the browser and viewer.

This was part of the original request for Albums back in 2013, 12 years ago.

Having drag and drop be the ONLY way to add to Albums is very cumbersome.

Could somebody give me a hint where I can find the albums, how to create one? I read your post in that way that there must be a UI element visible to drag images to. I can't find anything.
I have altered my GUI, probably before the album feature was introduced. I have looked into the configuration options if I can add something back by hand. But I only found 3 commands that can be added to the toolbar that are applicable only if an album already exists.
Do I have to reset my GUI or do a clean install?

It's better to post questions in General Support, as it is more likely to be seen; this board is for suggestions and gets fewer views.

Albums are to be found in the Catalog Filter pane. From the menu, select View->Panels and ensure Catalog Filter is checked to enabled it. Once it is enabled you can move it around. Depending on how you have rearranged your interface, it may be inconspicuous as it may have been reduced to a tab.

Albums are a tree item in the Catalog Filter pane. Once you find them and right-click on the Albums tree, the rest should be obvious.

Since you have reactivated this thread, I'll mention that the suggestions made earlier in this thread have been addressed. As of XnViewMP 1.9.6, the following improvements have been made:
  • Albums in the catalog tree now have comprehensive right-click options, to add, delete, rename, etc.
  • Images can be added to albums via the right-click context menu. Right-click on an image or multiple selected images, and Select Metadata->Add to Album
  • Images can be added to albums from the main menu as well: Metadata->Add to Album
  • The Add to Album menu is now dynamic, and will reflect the current list of albums without having to restart the program.
  • There is now a option to remove an image from all albums.
  • Collections have been implemented. A "Collection" is an album containing other albums. You can create a "new album" in the tree, and move existing albums into it with drag and drop, or create new albums inside it.
The Albums feature in XnViewMP now has very good functionality.

I'll also mention Smart Albums were also implemented in 1.9.6. Read more about them here:

Big +1 for this. Drag and drop is fine for a couple of files, but when you're managing a large library, it's easy to 'miss' the target folder or just lose track of where you're dragging. Having a simple right-click 'Add to Album > [Album Name]' would make the workflow so much faster.

Thanks for the enthusiasm, but since you're +1-ing this and saying it “…would make” you evidently didn’t really read the thread.

Please read my post from 7 December and you’ll see that that feature, and many others, already were added to the app.

Try actually exploring the right-click menu.
