Thumbnail Cache - Add folder

Post by robc »

This is GREAT. As you may have seen in the other topic, I was actually looking for something like a Tools | Create thumbnails or similar, so I really didn't notice the new button in the dialog. It does exactly what I suggested, that is create thumbnails automatically for a whole folder tree and it seems it's working fine, apart two small issues:

1. folder thumbnails are not created, so if you've chosen to display the 4-in-1 folder images and you navigate to a folder you still have a moment to wait for the images to be created, though it's not even really annoying since the thumbs in the folder have already been created

2. if you've chosen to thumbnail a big tree with lots of images, of course it takes some time: in such a case I experienced problems in the repainting of the main XnView window and of the dialog indicating the file currently being thumbnailed. It's not also possible to pause or abort the operation.

Indeed, a small button with a great feature.

I can confirm your experiences, the responsiveness of XnView during cache preparation should be improved, currently you cannot even cancel it.

I've just noticed that the list of cached folders can be sorted by size, name, ..., now. Very good. :-)

I know I may be picky... ...but I would love to specify multiple folders (and their subfolders) for Thumbnails caching in order to let XnView work alone for some long minutes/hours while I'm away... :D
Any UI suggestion for this?

I don't even see the dialog (almost...), it's not properly repainted during heavy operation.

Confirmed: I can't click on Cancel, I can't switch back to XnView UI if other windows are on top, I can't even move the processing/dialog window... :( ...looks like the caching reclaims all CPU for itself... :?

I do: XP Professional SP2 fully patched, P4 2.2GHz 768MB RAM. The disk has not much free space, though.

In Beta 5:
- 'Add folder' dialog is now responsive.
- I am not sure that folders (including '4 in 1') are cached whith 'Add folder'. Someone to confirm?

There is a post from me somewhere on the subject: as I said I've skipped b5 testing not to risk having to recreate all thumbs (due to the error in reordering the options), but in b4 folders are not cached automatically, only if you manually browse, as are video files by the way :-(

The dialog wa responsive already in previous betas.
