Transparency

Post by Barbara Heger »

Hi all,
I'm new in the group and hope for help. In the editing-programm I used before I had a FILTER who produced different ways of transparency in a picture, i.e. from left to right, from the middle to all sides of the picture, in waves and so on.
Do we have this in Xnview?

Markers…

:) Hello Barbara !
…Question: what is a BBCode, please?
• This is the set of markers used in the fora to choose the text-style in the messages you type.
- This is only text, and very similar to the HTML markers, except that BB-Code is simplified
and uses square-brackets […] instead of angle-brackets <…>.
- In the edit window (when you write any message), they are available from the tool-bar under the upper title-field.
Example :

Code: Select all

[b]blah blah[/b]
shall render “blah blah” as bold. Only select the string, then press the B button, and the trick is played !
- Same for the others I and U…
- There are too codes as text for the smileys you can add (displayed on the left-side board) etc.
- Personally, I've a HTML (free) editor able to write BB-Code too (useful for very big messages)
with its embedded stuff (from a menu), or better with a profile-patch I made myself… ;)

Do we have this in Xnview?
Although XnView has no built-in filter for this particular effect, you can always extend its functionality by integrating Adobe Photoshop compatible plug-ins.
  • AAA: Transparent Vignette (free)
Use to allow layer beneath to show through in a vignette pattern.
  • The Digital Artshop: Vignette Plus (£2.50)
A collection of ten different elliptical vignette styles in one handy filter
  • MediaSpark: Image Editing Filters » Vignette Transparent (free)
Image editing filters for edges, transparency and white out
  • Xero Graphics: Soft Vignette (free)
More vignette effects than any sane person could ever want
Let's remember that XnView is not – and was never meant to be – an image editor. It's a graphics viewer which happens to be compatible with 8BF plug-ins. As such it doesn't support layers (= Ebenen), and you can't set the foreground/background color.
Because there are also a few other quirks that need to be worked out, using plug-ins with transparency effects in XnView can be a tricky venture.
  1. Download and install this plug-in.
  2. Download this image and open it in XnView.
  3. In View mode, go to Image » 32 bits.
  4. Go to Filter » Adobe Photoshop Plug-In....
  5. In the Plug-In Manager, go to MediaSpark Filters » Vignette Transparent... and click on the Start... button.
  6. Push the slider for Vignette Intensity to 255 and leave the value for Center Mask Size at 0, then click OK.
  7. Repeat step #6.
  8. Exit the Plug-In Manager (OK).
  9. Go to File » Save as... and save the image as PNG file.
When looking at the result you'll notice the bug I was referring to earlier: The effect is only applied to (exactly) 3 quarters of the image. :|I'm confident, however, that Pierre will find a way to fix this.

Troken, do you mean “How did Pierre fix the problem” or “How to make a transparent vignette”?
I can only answer the 2nd question
