Anyone have any ideas please?

Which…Which… ?

:) Hello Eugenia !

• I've a few *.ai files here to test - under Win Xp-Pro SPI - XnView 1.92.1.

- The file v. 3 is not recognized…

- The files v.8 work OK, no crash. This in "View" mode and in the "Browser" mode as well …

- Please, tell us a bit more about which *.ai version your files are, the XnView and Windows versions you are running.
- There is another thread too (at least) about *.ai files, please use the Search…

 Kind regards,
Claude

Thanks for the quick response - I did try a search for illustrator files but no luck - I will try again

Anyway... I am using XP home sp1 and all my files were created in Illustrator CS2 - the same folder contains .eps files version 8 (as per stock site requirements).

It appears there is something amiss in my set up if you are not having problems :( :( :(

I *can* use bridge but XN View is SOOOOO convenient!

Options to check

Post by Clo »

:) Again…

• You could check your options for :

1. General - Operations >> [×] Display all image file-types (ticked here).

2. Options - Browser - File List >>
AI, PS, PDF [×]   [×]   [×] … Tick the needed boxes, according to your usual workflow…

Awww thanks so much for your time. Esp as I see you are on strike!

My settings are as you mentioned but the problem is not getting the .ai files to show - it's just that after about a minute of opening the folder - xn view goes on strike too

Oh well, don't know what else to try...

Thanks Xntriq - I have the latest Ghostscript and my problem is not that they will not open - they do, but as the pictures are loading xnview crashes.
It's very annoying!

Hi its a bit hard to send the whole folder - that is what crashes as the thumbnails are loading - this is the error detail:

AppName: xnview.exe AppVer: 1.92.0.0 ModName: gsdll32.dll
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 000aaad4
Does that sound like a ghost script problem?

One by one…

:) Hello Eugenia !

•The defect is indeed in that DLL which belongs to GS alright.

- I've two GSs here, and old 8.13 (no more used) where that item is 2.4 MiB, and a newer 8.53 (used) where it's 3 MiB.
…its a bit hard to send the whole folder…
• You could try that trick :
- In a (good) file manager, move your files one by one into a test_temp dir you have to create.
After the first file has been moved, try to open the original folder in XnView.
- If a crash occurs, move the second file and try again… and so on, till there is no more crash.
Obviously, the faulty file shall be the last moved - supposing that only one file is the culprit.
- According to the Murphy's Law*, generally it's the very last file ! :D
- If you have a mountain of *.ai in the original folder, you could attempt also
to dispatch them into several test_temp dirs, then process as above, but partial folder by partial folder, that saves time…
Good luck !
*Also so-called “Rule of the worst case” or “Law of the coffee spoon

• Or else, pack the whole folder as RAR or so, if not too huge as an archive, you could send it to Pierre (maybe).

Oh Wow I just never thoought it was one teeny file causing all the problems.

I found the offender, zapped it and lo, the world brightened.

Thanks for the good advice _ I am EVER so grateful!!

I will try also, my XnView crashes several times every day when trying to create thumbs for .AI or .PDF files. Very annoying, and it seems to have happened after 1.92.1...

Could you send me some sample? Do you have the AFPL or GPL version?

Latest 8.61 (I think it is the version). However I have reinstalled GhostScript, and will check if the crashes reappear.
