xnview 1.92.1 closes the program with o whitout images loaded. Only ask if you want save when have any opened image, and close the program. Same that CTRL+Q

I have not this behaviour!
Maybe an INI entry to configure that behaviour, please ?

Ok, i'll add one

ini option would be nice, but this option should be disabled by default IMHO. I don't use tabs in XnView, but sometimes I close all tabs using the Ctrl+W shortcut several times. Again - Ctrl+W should not close the program by default IMHO.

:) Hello !
…Again - Ctrl+W should not close the program by default IMHO

• I agree, and more precisely I'ld propose that INI entry as :
CloseLastExit=flag
Image0 : Keeps the programme open when the last file is closed via Ctrl+W
(default, as well for files in tabs as in file-windows or in full screen mode¦s)
Image1 : Closes the programme when the last file is closed via Ctrl+W in all modes.
Image2 : Closes the programme in full screen mode only.
Image3 : Prompts the user «All files are closed, do you want to quit the programme? [Yes] [No]»

• As GUI :

ImageImage

• What do you think ?

I know that a good and intuitive user interface is important. But such a big effort for a single key combination?

Shouldn't it be just:
Ctrl+F4 or Ctrl + Q for exiting. And Ctrl+W for closing a window?

I agree. I haven't encountered any program thats shuts down by pressing Ctrl+W, ergo XnView shouldn't either. Alt+F4 and Ctrl+Q should be enough for most users, another option just adds confusion to the program.

Actually I belive many users clicks the "close-program-X-square-thingie" in the upper right corner, anyway.

• Hi !
I know that a good and intuitive user interface is important. But such a big effort for a single key combination? …

Pierre said that he'll add an INI entry, that's not a very big effort and should solve the issue basically. It's OK for me.
- However, that key-combination is specially important, since currently its behaviour is bewildering by differing widely
from the usual one in all other applications…
- Indeed, a GUI option is not absolutely needed, although…Image
- I just drew that mock-up to show that it could fit in the appropriate place (without changing the rest of the dialogue).
It could prevent future useless threads here by “Key-man Newbies”… who never read the docs ! :D
…Shouldn't it be just: Ctrl+F4 or Ctrl + Q for exiting. And Ctrl+W for closing a window?

• Of course, but those who have asked for Ctrl+W to close XnView with the last opened file will not be satisfied…
And the vicious circle continues…

True, Clo, a vicious circle can emerge. There's some questions that can help to break and/or avoid the circle:
- Does the feature/functionality help and make sense for many users?
- Will the feature/functionality affect all users?
- Is the feature/functionality simple or rather complex?
- Does the usage follow standards?
- Are (simple) "workarounds" available for other users?

The main focus always should be on the users and usability of XnView, and to be more specific on the general users, not the power users. I think power users can get along with different behaviour of various application as long as a user interface is intuitive, consistent, and expectable.

The CTRL+W case
The current CTRL+W behaviour doesn't follow standards and is not really expectable. And all users are affected. :-| I think the situation is pretty clear.
The one and only remaining question is whether hidden options should be provided or not. I think not.

Right. Before continuing this discussion it makes sense to have a look at the original CTRL+W topic. Could someone (Pierre?) please point us to the topic that ignited the change in 1.92? (I couldn't find it and couldn't find any hint in the history of XnView, either).

I can't remember why i have changed that, but it was to fix a bug...

Questionable…

Postby Clo » Mon Feb 25, 2008 1:09 am

:) Hello !

• Thank you, I remember to have read up to If no more opened file, I quit ?
I missed the end of that thread on the moment…

• There are two main points :

1. The request of the claimant is questionable with regard to his arguments for the changed behaviour,
based on the kind of programme XnView is.
- IMHO, it's an editor as well, since we can change files in many ways.
- Moreover, I tested with Maxthon¦IE6, Firefox and Opera : These browsers do not close the programme (at least by default).
So, that the claimant told in the French thread is not true…

2. I can't understand why Pierre didn't set at least INI options when changing that…

• I checked in old versions 1.80.3 - 1.82.4 - 1.90 Alpha 2 : Ctrl+W behaves “classic”, it doesn't close the programme…

• Further, we have to redefine that behaviour when in Full Screen mode¦s,
I use this rarely hence the above proposed flags for an INI entry missed that case
(I edited and completed now, also the mock-up).

• Now, wait & see, I guess that we can't do more…:?

Strange----

Postby Clo » Thu Jun 19, 2008 10:56 pm

 All

:) Hello !

• Meanwhile, the issue has been fixed with the INI entry
[Start]
QuitNoView=0¦1

• However -regardless that it's quite succint comparing with the one proposed above - it causes an odd behaviour
in the following case (tested with 1.94 ß1):
1. Open any image file directly in View, i.e. from a file manager,
2. Enter or 2-click to switch to the browser,
3.Enter or 2-click again to come back in View
4. Ctrl+W to close the file …
• Instead of closing the file and stay with the empty View window as expected, we come back in the browser ! :bug:
Ctrl+W again closes the programme.
• Whether we come back in View, each Ctrl+W (in View) always switches to the browser,
hence it's impossible to simply close the file…

This is no a bug, if you close the view, you go back to the opened browser!

Ok, i'll check

NOT opened !

Postby Clo » Fri Jun 20, 2008 4:36 pm

 Pierre

:) Hello !
This is no a bug, if you close the view, you go back to the opened browser!

• The snag is that the browser is NOT opened yet ! Now, Ctrl+W OPENS the browser, while it was not !
- Like said above, I start the programme with a file, I never start with the browser from TC, in example.
- That didn't occur in previous versions with QuitNoView=0, hence there is a :bug: really…

Thank you for checking that.
