A lot of tagging

Post by helmut »

The menu for tagging (View > Tag) got pretty crowded these days. In 1.92 beta it looks like this:
-----------------
Tag current
Untag current
Invert
Untag all
Clear all tags
-----------------
Show tag box
-----------------

What's the difference between "Untag current" and "Untag all"?

"Clear all tags" will clear all tags - not just the ones in the current folder but all tags ever set. (Makes only sense in combination with the option in Tools > Browser > Thumbnails > Info icons". I think this function should be separated by seperator because this will affect not just the selected.

My suggestion:
-----------------
Tag
Untag
Invert
-----------------
Untag all (or "Clear all" or "Reset all" or "Reset all tags" or "Untag overall")
-----------------
Show tag box
-----------------

'Untag all' untag files from current view, and 'clear all tags' clear for all files

This is clear. But what's the difference between "Untag current" and "Untag all".

Untag current file / Untag all tagged files, right Pierre?

For me "Invert" is a bit confusing - there is a similar feature - "Invert selected" - to select all unselected files and unselect all selected, but here "Invert" is just to toggle the current file. Perhaps other term would be better - "Toggle", or "Invert current", or just "Tag/Untag"?

That is unclear and not intuitive. A feature that works outside the current working area (outside the current view or directory) should be called 'Global' IMHO. So 'Untag all' would change to 'Global Untag'.

The term "Clear tag category" might help reenforce the learning of this function- depending on how it will ultimately work.

We have the tags. And now we have a Tag category. That's confusing somehow.

I'd rather have something like "Global untag" or "Untag all tagged files (global)".

@pic_viewer: I do like your "global". ;-)

Tag is a temporary category as discussed on some thread...
I'm not sure that 'Global' is good

I don't like "global" either. I like "Untag all tagged files".

Yes
Still don't get it:
Untag: Untag current file
Untag all: Untag all files
Clear all tags: ???

There's something wrong, missing, or superfluous, I think.

Untag: Untag current file
Untag all: Untag all files from current view
Clear all tags: Untag all tagged files (stored in DB)
Pierre.

I see. But I think this is confusing.

Do we really need "Untag all files from current view"? With "Ctrl+A" and Space key does the same job.

(Actually I noticed that Space key does not set and unset but invert, which is wrong, I think. I'll start a new topic for this).
