Clean up the interface a bit

Post by lsolesen »

I think the toolbar is a bit bloated. I know it is possible to edit yourself and only show a basic one. However, I think that it should be as simple as possible for the standard user. Advanced users can put more stuff on the toolbar. A lot of the options should be in the menu. Also I like that the interface is more clear, so instead of using icons, it might be a good idea to use a work describing what the button does.

- The filter icon does not make much sense. Should be text.
- The edit favorites icon is out of place. Has anyone ever clicked on that? (It would make much more sense to have it as a text link when you are in the favorites pane)
- The sort by should also be text. It is strange to have an arrow and a-z when you have a wide variety of different possibilities.
- Instead of the view as, I would rather have an option described by a label, so I could change the thumbnail size.
- The rename should not be an icon. It should be triggered when doubleclicking the name of a file.

- The about should not be an icon, you will find that info easy in the Info menu.
- The eye does make sense, but why not just use a double click to show the picture (do not clutter the interface with unneccessary stuff)
- The rotate icons might make more sense, if they are closer to the image, e.g. as PhotoMechanic does.
- There are two icons for rotating, but you can also find the same option under the JPG lossless transformations?

A little baffling, some of these.
I think the toolbar is a bit bloated
I wish the toolbar had more buttons. Favorites on the Basic bar, for instance, and the ability to put any view-relevant command on a button seems de rigeur for any toolbar system.
A lot of the options should be in the menu.
???? Do you mean setup options?
so instead of using icons, it might be a good idea to use a work describing what the button does.
One can enable button text on in Options->Toolbar->Buttons. For myself, the toolbar text is the first thing I disable in every application. Perhaps you'd like an option to disable icons in the button bar?
- The filter icon does not make much sense. Should be text.
The coffee filter icon has been in use by Microsoft Office for over a decade. It's a standard iconic image.
- The edit favorites icon is out of place. Has anyone ever clicked on that?
I use it all the time as my list of favorites grows and morphs based on my projects. I do wish that Favorites was an hierarchical list (as implied by the folder icons it uses).
- The sort by should also be text. It is strange to have an arrow and a-z when you have a wide variety of different possibilities.
That's also another standard image that's been around (in this case) for decades. An "instant recognition" sort of icon, for most people.
- Instead of the view as, I would rather have an option described by a label, so I could change the thumbnail size.
A thumbnail size slider control has been requested many times in this forum. Is that what you meant?
- The rename should not be an icon. It should be triggered when doubleclicking the name of a file.
Agreed, In-place rename should be the default for all views.
- The about should not be an icon, you will find that info easy in the Info menu.
Standard software industry practice. Remove it if you don't like it.
- The eye does make sense, but why not just use a double click to show the picture (do not clutter the interface with unnecessary stuff)
Dbl-click behaviors are configurable in Options.
- The rotate icons might make more sense, if they are closer to the image, e.g. as PhotoMechanic does.
I think I'd like this too, but what about when you have selected a group of files? This needs thoughtful design: functional, behavioral, and visual.
- There are two icons for rotating, but you can also find the same option under the JPG lossless transformations?
JPG lossless transforms don't apply to non-jpg images. However, as I understand it (someone correct me here), the secondary image rotate icons default to lossless transform IF the selected file is a jpg.

Perhaps you'd like an option to hide ALL toolbars? That seems a reasonable request.

I mean no disrespect, but felt that your suggestions may have been "spur of the moment" ideas that deserved individual responses...

I agree with this one: The "?" is even a bit misleading because one might think this will open the help manual.

Also "Options" symbol should be hidden by default - once set one should not be forced to open up the options too often.
