Image quality

Post by Photure »

Hello,

XnView is a great program and it could be The Best if the image quality in viewing mode would be of the same high level as ACDSee.
Images viewed with ACDSee look a lot better and I was wondering if this would be possible in future releases of XnView without the loss of the high speed XnView now has?
In that case I would certainly prefer XnView above ACDSee :!: :!: :!:

Hello Pierrre,

Thanks for your reply, that's the solution! Image quality is now the same as in ACDSee!
I couldn't find this setting because my interface language is Dutch..... :?

Is it possible to improve the speed of the high quality zoom mode? It's too slow for me on an Intel E6700 Dualcore 2,66 GHz.

Yes, I agree too !
Calculate only the area that is really showed in the window for high quality zoom.
Is this good request (from Olivier_G) already applied into the v1.93.6 ? :

High quality zoom works fine on my (new) computer, don't have problems at all....

Yes, the High quality zoom (in view mode) works fine but it can be faster with this Olivier 's suggestion, especially for olds computers and/or larges images files (in MB) with a high zoom factor, it's worst.

With that ?

:) Hello !

• Another approach helpful for HQ zoom speed should be to get the feature required by the user Peter2,
and for which I proposed THAT MOCK-UP

• Supposing that you blow up the useful area only (as HQ), you indeed save a lot of memory,
and might get the motif as blown up much faster than currently…
- Just a thought.

Hello Clo,
This specific other function (magnifying glass into a predefined area) is a good idea too, both are possible, but personally I prefer a more ergonomic behavior, because it's more natural with the mouse.
What is Pierre's opinion ?

For information (testing) you can try this on your computer too ( options\View\ high quality zoom checked, and change zoom in fixed steps=99 ):
On my computer and with a 1280x1024 (1.25MP*) jpg 24bits file into the View mode:
(*with a fast computer you can do this test with a 10Mpixels file)
1-)first step zoom in view mode (mouse wheel or hotkey "+") = CPU 80% ~1/2 second
2-)second step = CPU 100% ~1.5 second
3-)step = CPU 100% ~4 seconds
4-)step = CPU 100% ~5 seconds
5-)step = CPU 100% ~8 seconds
6-)step = CPU 100% ~11 seconds
7-)step = CPU 100% ~15 seconds
8-)step = CPU 100% ~18 seconds
........then 63 seconds for only 8 steps (at 99) with a small jpg (1.25 Mpixels only).
It's what why i don't use this high quality zoom function under xnview.

What are your values ????

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
An idea about: to calculate only the area that is really showed in the window for high quality zoom steps.
This could be done by a new hidden function ( catch the mouse position, calculate the area with the "change zoom in fixed steps" value around the mouse position, use the Crop function "shift+x", and full screen zoom function hotkey "/"), then it will be very fast especially on large MPixels files too.
________________________________________________________________
Pierre, is it also possible to allow steep values higher than 99 ? , because it's not possible into the v1.93.6.

I've made such feature in XnView MP, so when i'll release a new alpha, please check if it's better...

Hello,
Yes JohnFredC, same problems then same solution(s) !
By this way (calculate only the utile area for the high quality zoom & consider as "temporary garbage" for each steps zoom the rest of the image to improve the rapidity) even the Clo's suggestion (magnifying glass into a predefined area) could be done easy & quickly with a personal hotkey & a custom area setting for example.
I hope this change will be also implemented into the Win version later, (not only for the MP version) if Pierre has enough time !
