JPEG2000: 0 bytes files get created when opening JP2 files

Post by Dstruct »

When opening JP2 files (with the standard JPEG2000 plugin), XnView (1.93.6) creates three temporary 0 bytes files in the root of my "D:" volume!? After the image got loaded completely the files are deleted automatically.

Why are these files created at all? If they are really needed, wouldn't it be much better to create them in the user's temporary folder?

Here a screenshot: strange-files-jp2.jpg (96 kB)

-> You see that I've opened this xnview.jp2 (393 kB) file from "D:\Downloads" and these

s1gs
s1gs.1
s1gs.2

three temporary files can be seen on the left pane under "D:\".

:) Hello !

• Your sample (401,693 Bytes) works here in XnView 1.96.6, and also in and old 1.82.4…
- Both have the Xjp2.dll library, same size 225,280 Bytes, the newest being dated 2008, March, 13.
• However, I tried to display it in Total Commander Lister with the "Imagine" plug-in, and I got a nice crash…

- Win Xp-Pro SP1

Of course the image works fine.

But these temporary (?) files shouldn't be created in my "D:" folder!

:) Again…

• I don't get any "0 byte" file anywhere, I checked the temp directory :
e:\Documents and Settings\CLAUDE\Application Data\XnView\
it's as so empty as my purse… :P
- Nothing in the drives roots either…

Yeah, these files are just there for a short moment! They get deleted automatically once the image got loaded completely ...

ok, but can you foward this request to the developer of this plugin?

and: why do you supply version "1.93.6 RC1 (unstable)" of this plugin with xnview? isn't there a "stable" version?

Indeed there shouldnt go any temp files. For e.g. normal, non-privileged useres dont have any write access there and thats for security reason.

Dstruct:
- did you tried to open the file with admin rights or with user-rights.
- is your harddisk ntfs formated,
- whats about the security settings of the root-folder of the disk?
- i can open your file (mine too), but have permanent trouble (http://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.php?t=15312) with bigger (maybe something over 2MB or more than 1992x1494pixels) files (my test file https://jira.secondlife.com/secure/atta ... 7a_004.j2c)

Couldnt you maybe try to run filemon (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysi ... 96642.aspx) while you open the file? so the read and write access will be logged.

Ciao :)
