Backing up category information

For me the best way (the secure way) is to use and add IPTC keywords (Ctrl+i) inside each .jpg photo.Strumpf wrote:Hi, i am using XnView categories, to classify my photos
some day a go i have updated XnView and he had lost of Category data
is it possible to save that also, so i dont have to re-categorize all pictures?
By this way it's always possible to make a new search (by keywords) and restore the lost categories.
The opposite way (from categories) is not always possible, because categories can be lost if:
- images are renamed
- a (or some) folder name is changed
- category.db is deleted or moved ...
- (maybe also with a new XnView version with a new data base management, but I don't think so, because i have never had this problem).
In your personal case, try to go back to your previous XnView version, and see if your categories come back.
Or try to find the "good" category.db xnview file (maybe in an other place ?)
If your categories are restored, you also can easily add IPTC keywords inside your .jpg.

actualy i have copied entire XnView folder, but category file wasnt there, i have found it now, in Doc. and Sett. folder.
I like your sugestion to use Keywords, but as i allready done categories, my spontaneous question is:
Can i add keywords in batch to all files based on category where they are?
and btw. nice think is that if you move files, category will automacly update
(i moved files and folders inside in XnView, and he maintein categories)
Thanks a lot for you fast answer

Yes, not into the batch process but it's almost the same (category by category) :Strumpf wrote:actualy i have copied entire XnView folder, but category file wasnt there, i have found it now, in Doc. and Sett. folder.

Into your category select all, or multi-select or tag jpg files in the browser mode, then Ctrl+i , add keywords, ..., write all selected

Can't add keyword using "Edit IPTC data"
Hi, when I select one or a few JPEG files and choose "Edit IPTC data", I can't seem to add any keywords (unless the files did not have any keywords to start with, in which case, I can only add one keyword). What happens is that after keying in a keyword in the "Add" field, pressing the "Add" button moves the keyword into the box below. But when I click "Write" or "Write to selected" button at the bottom of the dialog, the keyword simply disappears from the keyword list! It's the same using "Edit Metadata" in the preview. Am I doing something wrong here. Please advise, thanks!

Then try to replace xmp.dll file (XnView\addon\ folder) should works even with the v1.94.2.

iptc xmp bug
Thanks for your reply. Yes it's the same bug. I tried replacing the xmp.dll from the zipped file. Crashed my XnView. When I press the "Write" or "Write all selected" button, the dialog box and the XnView Browser below turned bright translucent white and then Windows tells me XnView has stopped working and exits. Is there some other way to fix it? or I'll just wait.
Btw, I've been playing with XnView and find it's absolutely wonderful (as have many other users). I'll be using it as my media browser of choice. Until the IPTC-XMP bug is fixed, I'll have to use iTag to manage the tagging. Cheerios.
