More intelligent hand cursor

Post by Jim »

When talking about ACDSee (Classic version), I have another (small) enhancement for XnView. When viewing large images in ACDSee (in it's original size/no fit), the default arrow-cursor automatically changes into a hand-cursor, so that the image can be moved around immediately using the left-mouse cursor. Of course, this is only automatically enabled when the 'fit image to window'-option isn't set.

It would be nice if XnView also had such an option. XnView uses the right-cursor (non-automatically).

Example, Tool | Options | Keyboard/Mouse - Left Button: new entrance, example:
- move around with cursor when viewing in original size.

Kind Regards,
Jim

I can't find this option in ACDsee Classic?

Thank you for your quick reply and providing a more appropriate title for the subject.

The feature is present in ACDSee Version 2.43, but also in v2.44

When an image is viewed in it's original size (no fit), the left cursor
automatically changes into a hand-cursor with which you can immediate move/drag the image around (so that you can see all the parts of the image).
The smart (left) hand cursor is only automatically enabled when the image-viewing is set to viewing in it's original size.

I think this is a nice (ergonomic-)feature that would enhance XnView.

Yes a good idea, many users don't know that an image can be moved with a mouse, they try left mouse button maybe, but it's possible with right only...

You could read (and support maybe) my suggestion here - Change mouse button for moving large images

Hello Dreamer,

Thank you for bringing your earlier posting to notice (I didn’t know that this feature was already requested). I agree with your suggestions.

It would be nice if the user could use the left and right mouse-button to his/her own needs. So we would have the following preferences:

Tools | Options | View - Keyboard/Mouse - Left mouse-button: options:
a. previous file
b. zoom in
c. make selection
d. move selection
e. automated handcursor for moving image around when viewing images in their original size

Right mouse-button: options:
f. next file
g. zoom out
h. make selection
i. move selection
j. automated handcursor for moving image around when viewing images in their original size

Theoretically more suboptions could be added to a.-j., example:
B1. zoom in with xx% steps.
G1. zoom out with xx% steps.
Before xnview, I always used LMB for moving large images (and now in other programs), even now, I often try first LMB, then RMB... So it's very important for me and I believe for many (new) xnview users...M
Yes. Digital camera’s are used more and more. The images taken with it are mostly in a high resolution. So when you transfer them to your harddisk and watch them on your monitor, the images are mostly larger than the screen. It would be therefore nice if the left-cursor was immediately available to move the images around (in lot’s of cases you just want to watch them without shrinking the image, this also counts for graphic-designers). I think imho this is a future used more than making and moving a selection.

OK, so please support my suggestion here - it's more transparent. Thanks.

Make selection and move selection is possible to do with a single option/button - even now.

Anyway, your initial suggestion is good, I've got small enhancement - show "hand cursor" always when moving is possible (also after zoom in).

BUT - now I see a small problem - even if an image is large (larger than screen), make selection is still possible and for that, hand cursor is not very suitable. So we (or Pierre) must decide, what would be better...
