How Do I Tag Photos In XnView? Help!

Post by jaqian »

Can anyone tell me how to tag photos in XnView? I presume it exists as I can see categories and that wouldn't be any good without tagging.

Also can anyone tell me how I can batch rename photos based on shoot date?

Thanks in advance,
Rob

No I wan't to apply tags, then later categorise them. For instance I would have a category "Family" and under that I would like to tag photos of my children as "Niamh" and "Daragh" etc.

I can see how to add or change categories but I don't see where I can add a tag (keyword) to a photo. Thanks.

You can drag&drop the file into the category, or in the preview panel you can check the category...

Am I right in thinking then that there is no tagging only categories? Will the categories be saved to IPTC data?

You can tag with keywords in the IPTC data dialog box: Ctrl+I

You can search the IPTC data for those keywords: Ctrl+F

Sure, select multiple photos and use Ctrl+I.

By the way, you can create your own categories. For instance, you could create subcategories under "Family" - "Niamh" and "Daragh". Maybe that is what you're looking for?

Thanks Troken.

No its definetely tags that I'm interested in and writing to IPTC, that way no matter what program I use down the road I will always be able to search by tag. I've many photos already tagged with Picasa but I'm not too fond of it, XnView looks really good and is constantly being updated as well. :D

My problem is that I've been taking digital photos since 2002 and haven't really organised them very well and am now trying to sort this out. And to ad to that I've scanned in most of the familys' photos. All told I've 50,000+ photos, which I'm trying to whip into shape!

I've decided to organise my photos in folders by date and then tag everything so that I an find what I'm looking for :)

Yes, Im a fan of IPTC too, since it is - as you mentioned - a standard and can be read by other software. Seems you've got a lot of work to do, good luck!

It would be easier with the Face Recognition, Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ7 has this feature, as well as the software from Panasonic...

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ7 software
The portrait images taken with the camera’s Face Recognition function are organized neatly in the folder of the name registered with the camera. Not only that, the software also features an independent Face Recognition function that recognizes the faces in the picture stored in your PC to sort the photos by the face. You do not have to pick out each photo one by one out of thousand of photos when you only want pictures of a specific person. With PHOTOfunSTUDIO 3.0 HD Edition, the software automatically sorts your images into virtual folders based on the faces you registered. You can also enjoy slideshows with a variety of effects and use your iTunes music library as background music. Motion pictures can be uploaded directly to YouTube using the built-in YouTube uploader.

It would be a nice feature, don't you think? I'll start a new topic / suggestion, so you can support it, if you want.

I just had a look at XnView's search function and don't know how to:

- store the search result so it does not get lost when clicking on any of the buttons (Browse, View...)

- search within the search result list (no such option or path entry)

Someone enlighten me please.

I tried this last night and it wouldn't work when I selected 15 images but would when I selected only 6 or so, I was hoping to select 100s :)

I tested to tag 24 images, works fine here. Can someone else please verify this?

BTW only JPG and TIF can make use of IPTC.
