i use xnview to derive settings i use in nconvert for batch processing. i've recently
gotten some problem files and have found that using tools i find in gimp i can get
better results than i'm getting using similar tools in xnview. specifically, i'm referring
to the levels and curves tools in gimp.
gimp allows me to set three points in the levels tool, one each for black, mids, whites.
xnview (or, at least, the version i've been on) only allows for black and white. is this
still the case?
secondly, gimp gives me a tool for setting curves, either by color channel or all. i can
set points on the curve to give it either a linear or bezier-ish shape. i don't see
anything like this in xnview. has this capability been added? will it be?

Re: question about levels and curves
thanks XnTirq.
since the links you post span 2004 for the earliest to the newest of over a
year ago, i take it i shouldn't hold my breath.
the smart curve photoshop plugin seems promising but there are some issues.
first, i don't see how i could get useful info out of it for use in nconvert
processing. maybe you or someone else could point me to how to do this if
i've missed something.
secondly, the smart curves plugin seems to be a windows plugin. one reason
i like xnview/nconvert is the cross platform availability. i use windows to
get my setups and linux boxes to batch process. don't think i could use the
smart curves plugin this way. again, please point me to where i might be
wrong about this.
lastly, there are a lot of links in here pertaining to aut-this-or-that. that's
exactly what i don't want. what i'm looking for is not a one button solution
that hides its thinking from me. i'm looking for tools that i can manipulate
and extract settings from so that i can apply those settings in batch via
nconvert.
thanks again,

Re: question about levels and curves
Yeah, I miss 3-points levels too.BabaG wrote:gimp allows me to set three points in the levels tool, one each for black, mids, whites.

2-points is not enough. Middle point is important.
Re: question about levels and curves
and curves. xnview is sophisticated enough that i find it surprising that it's missing these.
for my purposes, though, it wouldn't matter if they were included if nconvert didn't have
them.
