v1.97 IPTC entries not found by windows

Post by mvv »

If I enter IPTC data, these are not recognized by Windows (and by a website I upload my pictures to).

1. select a photo and ctr-i to pop up the iptc-dialog
2. enter text for eg document name, description, copyright
3. write
4. go to windows explorer (do no use xnview), select the photo and alt-enter
5. windows shows no information (and the main trouble: a website where I upload my photo's to does not recognize the iptc-fields)

Perhaps XMP is used instead of IPTC

These are EXIF entries in group IFD0 (XPTitle, XPComment, XPAuthor, XPKeywords, XPSubject),

Thanks for your remarks. I was testing them past weekend.

@xnview: I had the option 'renew or make XMP' (i hope this is the english, I use the dutch language) on and I deselect it now. I used a number of programs to see if they could read the IPTC (iTag, geosetter). They can. In Vista, the IPTC info is recognized under the extra tab of the properties.

@Klaus: You are right. XP handles this different than Vista. I have the latter at home, but posted from my work with XP. I did not realize the difference when I posted. Vista sees the IPTC on my home computer now.

The problems with the website remain, but I will adress the webmaster there. I wonder what has changes, because there were no troubles a few months ago.

Thanks again,

Mark

Hi guys,

I'm using the Ctrl+D to describe my pictures.
I understand this is written in descript.ion and in the jpeg header .
Now I'd like to have the comment visible under Windows 7 explorer.

I see Xpcomment is the field used, but how can I copy or create it from xnview (pref. easily...)

Read this : http://dev.exiv2.org/boards/3/topics/530

It gives a fairly good explanation of how the XP metatags are encoded.

Now read this:

http://freeweb.siol.net/hrastni3/foto/e ... oolgui.htm

It talks about a graphical user frontend to Phil Harvey's ExifTool, a Perl-driven command-line metadata tag editor that has, as one of its functions, writing, reading and editing the Exif tags used by XP in File>Properties>Summary tabs intuitively (or almost).

Now Exiftool in its original (?! - perhaps slightly tweaked) state is the EXIF/IPTC "engine" behind XnViewMP. Just an observation. I'm personally more partial to Andreas Huggel's EXIV2, but I suppose there were something on the order of 57 ways to adapt the former to Pierre's uses -- or he was more familiar with Perl as a language -- so he chose that one.

Also, for XP, there's a freeware 3d-party add-on* for Windows Explorer that adds a new tab, "EXIF Tags", to the Properties window when graphics files containing EXIF data are selected. The link to this add-on, and information about it, is here: http://home.surewest.net/frcn/EXIF.html .

Every little bit helps.

No, exiftools is only used for some tasks...

Salut,

I see. Well, just to give a (for me) ready example, 0.34 Beta of MP (Windows)has none of the familiar items in the Edit menu related to EXIF & IPTC, Description and Comment. So which "tasks" would these be? Or am I looking in the wrong menus?
